Product Description
Technics SU-G700M2 integrated amplifier is a versatile amp with a wide range of digital and analogue inputs. These include USB-B for your PC or MAC as well as optical. It also features a low noise phono input for a turntable – this phono stage has four levels of gain for different cartridge types, including MM and MC.
This amplifier offers 70 Watts per channel, which is plenty to drive most speakers. Technics JENO engine optimises the signal that drives the amplifier and the LAPC circuits make sure that speaker matching is optimised. It also features a class AA headphone amplifier designed to get the best possible sound from your headphones.
JENO engine
Class D amplifiers use a series of pulses to provide the output. This is known as Pulse Width Modulation or PWM. The SU-G700M2 uses the Technics JENO engine, to ensure that the PWM signal is as accurate as possible. JENO stands for Jitter Elimination and Noise Shaping Optimization.
JENO is multistage process that first involves resampling the incoming audio data. This uses a highly stable clock signal to eliminate jitter. Jitter is caused by the mistiming of the data, which can make the sound ‘mushy’. The PWM conversion circuit has noise shaping to further optimise the signal. The result is music with as much detail as possible preserved.
Load adaptive phase calibration (LAPC)
Speaker impedance is not the same as DC resistance. Most speakers have an impedance of between 4 ohms and 16 Ohms. Impedance is a mixture of resistance, capacitance and inductance, and changes with frequency. Linear amplifiers are less affected by frequency/ impedance mismatches than digital amplifiers.
Class D amplifiers can have a more pronounced amplitude/frequency mismatch due to them having a low pass filter on the output. This filter is essentially a choke, with inductance, similar to a speaker voice coil. These two inductors tend to react with each other.
The SU-G700M2 uses an active measuring technique to best match the actual connected speaker. The result should be a much better match. Consequently, there is a flatter frequency response and a rich sound.
Low noise switching power supply
The SU-G700M2 features a low noise switching power supply. These are more efficient and generate less heat than linear power supplies. However, they can generate high frequency noise, although this is less of an issue with Class D amplifiers. However, steps are taken to move any noise away from the audio frequency band. This is done by raising the switching frequency from 100kHz to 400kHz. The switching transistor is a FET which can work well at high frequencies. Moreover, the final regulator stage also acts to block any noise for the best amplifier performance.
High build quality and three section construction
Most amplifiers have three sections, comprising, the power supply, high level amplification circuits and low level signal or preamp circuits. Notably, with the SU-G700M2 each section has it’s own PCB, and is individually shielded. As a result there is no mutual interference. For even better shielding the base plate is made of two 1.2mm and 2mm thick steel plates. Additionally, a top panel of 1.6mm steel pale is included. Finally, the front is made of 7mm thick aluminium. This construction also resists vibration.
Low noise phono input
For vinyl lovers, there is a low-noise phono input. A FET is used for the first stage amplifier, this is low noise and uses a differential parallel connection for even more noise rejection. As mentioned this also features a four level gain adjustment. This enables you to match the output of the chosen moving magnet (MM) or moving coil (MC) cartridge.
Class AA headphone amplifier
Technics developed the Class AA system for headphone amplifiers. Normally amplifiers use a single amplifier for both the voltage gain and current amplification sections. Technics use a separate voltage and current amplifier. This effectively makes the voltage amplification class A while the current amplification is Class B. This is the best of both worlds. In the SU-G700M2, two high-grade op-amps are used to provide music that has low distortion as well as a wide frequency range. Class AA will also better match the driven headphones.
Connectivity
Digital inputs include 2 optical and 2 coaxial sockets as well as USB. Analogue inputs include a phono input and two line level RCA inputs. There is also a line out that is analogue only and a pre-out for a preamp or subwoofer. Finally, there is a trigger input/output and the speaker binding posts are gold plated. They can take the usual spade connectors or bare wire.
