Product Description
The Technics SL-1210GR2 Turntable is the black version of the latest iteration of this popular turntable. It has several upgrades including the new Delta Sigma motor drive. It also has an improved and heavier platter. The new motor drive reduces the minute vibrations generated by the motor.
This results in a richer spatial expression. Moreover, the switching power supply features a noise detection and elimination circuit. This also improves the sound.
This two-speed turntable includes a strobe and pitch control for very accurate speed control. Another upgrade is the weight and construction of the platter, it is now heavier and has more strengthening ribs.
The S-shaped tonearm is fitted with a very precise bearing that needs very little force to move. This results in precise tracking, and the latest motor reduces interference, particularly in the midrange.
The latest generation Delta sigma motor drive
Technics have been making direct-drive turntables since 1970 and the latest SL-1210GR2 Turntable continues that tradition. Direct drive solved several problems. The main one was a poor signal-to-noise ratio. The other was wow and flutter, from the old belt and motor mechanisms.
Consequently, direct-drive turntables became popular with radio stations. This was due to their quick start ability as much as sound quality. Next, in 2016 Technics released the coreless direct drive motor.
This has undergone constant improvements, including the latest Delta Sigma Drive. This is designed to eliminate the minute vibrations that can interfere with the sound.
The latest motor drive technology
The new motor features PWM to give a more accurate speed control. This has been inspired by Technics' work on digital Class D amplifiers. These also use Pulse Width Modulation for the output.
The result is a motor drive with low distortion and precise speed control. The ΔΣ-Drive uses delta-sigma conversion methods to dampen any motor vibration for a richer spatial expression.
Low noise switching power supply
The Technics SL-1210GR2 Turntable features a switching power supply that operates at above 100kHz. This is much higher than the highest audio frequencies. As a result, there is no interference.
Another advantage of switching power supplies is that they do not need a large transformer. Consequently, there is no risk of induced hum or mechanical noise. Moreover, this unit has a noise-cancelling circuit that combines a noise detection circuit with an error correction amplifier.
As a result, any noise on the output can be used to generate an antiphase signal that is used to cancel out the noise.
A heavy and rigid platter
The platter of the Technics SL-1210GR2 Turntable now weighs over 2.5kg, this is 800 grams heavier than the previous version. Additionally, it has more strengthening ribs. Moreover, a two-layer construction is used with a damping layer of rubber on the base.
This gives the unit high rigidity and resistance to resonance. Lastly, there is more surface area in contact with the rubber and the increased mass helps to eliminate speed variations.
A high sensitivity tonearm
The Technics SL-1210GR2 Turntable has a very lightweight, low-mass tonearm. As a result, the tracking is improved. Additionally, the amount of force needed to move the arm is very low.
This is achieved by using a cut-processed housing along with highly precise bearings. The tonearm is of a traditional S-Shaped design with a lightweight aluminium pipe. The high build quality results in an initial motion sensitivity of only 5mg. Finally, a headshell is supplied and any cartridge can be used.
High grade components
The casing of the Technics SL-1210GR2 Turntable has a two-layer construction that unifies the BMC and the aluminium chassis. Moreover, the chassis is isolated from the outside world by special silicone feet.
These absorb any external vibration to prevent feedback. Finally, the output is provided by a pair of gold-plated RCA terminals. This output enclosure is shielded to stop any noise from entering the sensitive cartridge wiring.
