Product Description

Technics SL-1200GR turntable is an upgraded version of the SL-1200G that came out in 2016. This deck set new standards for direct drive turntable performance and the ‘G’ version improves on this even further and is a very well featured turntable.

The coreless direct drive motor eliminates any chance of ‘cogging’ and the high density platter reduces vibration. This heavy plater is also rubber damped and was computer designed to give the best performance. There is a pitch control for accurate speed setting and the body has many anti-vibration features.

Rigid platter for less vibration

The platter has been improved and has a better damping factor. Damping refers to how fast the platter stops vibrating after an impact. The high rigidity is achieved by having a two a layer construction. Moreover, deadening rubber has been applied to the entire rear surface. This reduces the chance of any vibration reaching the record. Additionally, the platter has a high mass, at 2.5 kg, this has the effect of resisting speed changes. The design was refined using computer simulation and ribs were added to further stiffen the platter.

High precision direct drive motor

The SL-1200GR features a high precision direct drive motor that has a coreless drive. The motor is servo controlled for highly accurate speed, and uses a ROM generated sine wave. There is also a pitch control and strobe for adjusting the speed, for pinpoint accuracy. The motor is tuned to have a high start up torque, with a start up time of only 0.7 seconds and direct drive motors have the advantage of starting faster than belt drive units.

“S” shaped tonearm

The tonearm of the SL-1200GR is made of aluminium and will track the disc with high precision. It is a static balanced S-shaped design, with a lightweight aluminium pipe. The gimbal suspension uses a cut-processed housing, that achieves a good motion sensitivity and will accurately track the groove. The counterweight has a wide range of adjustments, allowing most types of cartridges to be used. A quality headshell is provided.

Highly rigid body

The die-cast parts of the chassis are unified with the body by using special silicon rubber. This has both good vibration damping, as well as long-term reliably. Moreover, vibration in the horizontal direction is absorbed by cylindrical tubes using microcell polymers. Microcell polymer is a type of plastic with microscopic holes that act like a suspension. Finally, the rubber mounting can be screwed down slightly to prevent vibration when mounted in a rack. There is also a horizontal adjustment, that can be used to ensure the record is central - this prevents any rotational variation or wow.

Types of cartridge

The SL-1200GR does not come with a cartridge, so you have a choice of selecting your own phono cartridge. There are two main types of cartridge - moving magnet and moving coil. Moving magnet cartridges are most common, are generally less expensive and have a relatively high output at around 5mV. Moving coil cartridges are harder to make and hence usually more expensive. The way they operate is reversed. Moving magnet cartridges have a magnet mounted onto the cantilever that holds the stylus. This moves inside a coil to generate the audio signal, while moving coil cartridges have the coil mounted on the cantilever. This has the advantage of low mass, and better high frequency tracking. However, the output is much lower at around 1mv or less. For cartridge advice, please feel free to contact us.

A choice of Preamp

The SL-1200GR does not have a built-in preamp and the choice of preamp is determined by the cartridge you choose. Budget integrated amplifiers will have an input for a moving magnet cartridge only. However, better models will have a switchable input for MM and MC cartridges. As an alternative to built-in inputs, we always recommend a separate outboard phono stage to get the best possible sound from your choice of cartridge.

Another factor with record playback is equalization. Records are recorded with bass cut and treble boost. This needs to be reversed on playback. How accurate this is is dependent on the quality of the components used. Most capacitors and resistors change value with temperature. That is why high-end preamps are designed to be left on all the time to maintain a stable temperature.
