Product Description

Technics SL-1200G turntable is a higher end model in the range, featuring a lightweight magnesium tonearm and three layer platter. The direct drive motor is coreless with a high torque. This resists cogging and gives a highly accurate speed. There is also a pitch adjustment and strobe.

The plater is made of three layers and has a high mass that resists speed variations. It is also balanced to reduce the chance of platter ‘wobble’. Finally, the unit comes with a quality headshell leaving the cartridge choice up to you.

Direct drive motor

Turntables can suffer from minute speed variations known as cogging. To mitigate this technics have developed a direct drive motor that is coreless with no iron core. The SL-1200G motor has a twin-rotor construction that has a low bearing load as well as a high torque. The result should be a sound with great detail and warmth. The motor technology was developed for digital drives that require a fast starting torque along with very accurate speed.

Three-layer platter

The turntable platter is another step up, with a three-layered construction. The combined brass and aluminium platter, of the SL-1200G, delivers performance closer to that used by studio decks. Moreover, the sandwich construction has a rubber coated base that eliminates any resonance. The high mass resists any speed changes.

Another issue with platters is uneven weight distribution. This causes the platter to wobble, degrading the sound. As a result, high precision measuring equipment is used, to ensure that the platter is balanced.

Highly accurate tonearm tracking

The tonearm fitted to the Technics SL-1200G, is made of lightweight magnesium metal. This has a high damping factor that resists vibration. The gimbal suspension system has both the horizontal and vertical rotational axis at the same point. There is also a high precision bearing. The result is a very light tonearm with superb tracking.

Four layered cabinet construction

The cabinet is precision manufactured, starting with a 10mm thick aluminium top panel. This is immaculately finished and added to a three-layered sandwich of aluminium and heavyweight rubber. This damps any vibration and provides a solid mounting for the motor and tonearm.

A choice of cartridge

The SL-1200G comes with a quality headshell leaving the cartridge choice up to you. At present, there are two main types of cartridges. Moving magnet and moving coil. Moving magnet types are the most common and have a relatively high output of around 5mV. On the other hand, moving coil cartridges have a low output, which is typically less than 1mV.

The design is different - moving magnet cartridges have a tiny magnet mounted on the end of the cantilever that holds the stylus. This moves inside a pair of coils generating the audio signal. Moving coil cartridges reverse this, with the coils mounted on the cantilever. MC cartridges have less mass and better high-frequency tracking. Notably, the different outputs and impedances of cartridges, need different preamp gains.

Selecting a phono preamp

The SL-1200G does not have a built-in pre-amp. Therefore you will need either a separate preamp or an integrated amplifier with a phono input. In order of cost, integrated amplifiers are the cheapest way of connecting a turntable. However, not all have a phono stage, and only the high end models will have the capability of using a moving coil cartridge. Next, come separate phono stages, most of which will have a gain switch for either MM or MC cartridges. Some will also have multiple settings for impedance and gain to best match the chosen cartridge. Try to match the cost of the cartridge with the cost of the preamp and turntable. For advice on both, please feel free to contact us to discuss a package along with this turntable.
