Product Description

Save 40% on these Tannoy Mercury 7.4 floorstanding speakers, latest version of these floorstanders which deliver more power and musical enjoyment than ever before. These pairs have slightly tatty outer packaging but the speakers are as new, boxed and complete with Tannoy's full 10 year warranty.

Suitable for larger listening rooms or where high volumes are required, Mercury 7.4’s 44 litre twin-ported cabinet, dual 178mm (7") mid/bass drivers and refined 28mm (1.1") soft dome tweeter pack a mighty punch.

Drive Unit

To make the latest generation of Mercury even better than the award-winning Mercury Vi series required completely new driver designs. The new Mercury 7 mid/bass drivers are fitted with a significantly larger than previous models, enabling them to deliver deeper bass with greater punch than any competitor design. The Mercury 7 cone uses an updated version of Tannoy’s proprietary multi-fibre cone material with a smoothly sculpted profile for better dispersion and more accurate midrange reproduction.

The light and stiff cone delivers fast, tight bass while the new computer optimised rubber surround provides exceptionally high excursion without over-damping the cone. The new 28 mm (1.10") Mercury 7 tweeter uses a soft woven polyester dome that is coated to Tannoy’s exacting specification with a micro layer of nitro-urethane. This special lamination process damps the dome and pushes its break-up frequencies far beyond the audio range. The trebble is smooth and detailed with an extended frequency response to over 32 kHz.

Technology

Throughout the signal path, Mercury 7 benefits from technologies trickled down from Tannoy’s high-performance and luxury speaker ranges. The crossovers employ close tolerance components throughout, including low-loss laminated iron core inductors for seamless integration between drivers. Internal wiring is silver-plated Oxygen Free Copper and speaker terminals utilise Tannoy custom designed gold-plated binding posts.

As befits a flagship of any Tannoy loudspeaker series, the Mercury 7.4 boasts class leading peak power handling at 300 Watts and extremely high 93dB/watt efficiency making it suitable for the broadest range of partnering equipment. Along with the high-current crossover and audiophile grade components, Mercury 7.4 can be driven hard and deliver realistic dynamics, yet remains subtle and refined at everyday listening levels. Its wideband frequency response from 32Hz up to over 32kHz ensures peak performance with standard as well as High Resolution Audio formats to make the Mercury 7 series flagship model a future-proof powerhouse.

Construction

Mercury 7 cabinets are the series’ most acoustically neutral enclosures to date. By creating a rigid, low resonant foundation for the drivers, has always been the starting point for Mercury models, ensuring reduced cabinet colouration giving a natural and more spacious sound. To further enhance imaging and produce the widest soundstage, the drivers are positioned in a D’Appolito driver configuration.

By placing the tweeter centrally between the two bass/mid drivers, the speaker’s dispersion characteristics are smoothed through the critical crossover region resulting in a highly articulate musical performance on or off the loudspeaker’s main axis. This eliminates the traditional ‘sweet spot’ to deliver peak performance across more seats in your listening room.

Cabinet Material

The new cabinets also boast extensive use of Tannoy’s Differential Materials Technology (DMT) compound. Used in critical areas, such as driver to cabinet interface and crossover component mounts, this high tech material damps unwanted vibrations and further reduce colouration. As with DMT application in Tannoy’s luxury and Prestige loudspeaker ranges, the treatment delivers a crisper, more open sound with enhanced detail and micro-dynamics.

    18 Dec 2018

I have had the Dali Zensor 7 and the Q Acoustics 3050 in parallel with the Tannoy. The Dali was extremely beautiful but sound wise the Tannoy is a much better speaker than both the Dali and the Q Acoustics. When it comes to classical music with huge orchestra, the scale of the Tannoy is in another dimension. It is much more balanced than the rest, much deeper and detailed. Just pair it with the proper amplifier and the correct source. It loves old Marantz and Sansui amplifiers and a decent THX certified sound card.
It is a pity how one review managed to mislead so many people. By the way, not many people know that the Mercury 7.4 is a anniversary edition for the 90th birthday of Tannoy.
Have brought several hours of joy to my family every evening. Great speaker!
Very grateful to Tannoy for the amazing sound andto Audio Affair for the affordable price and great service!
