Product Description
Tangent PreAmp II pre amplifier is part of the Tangent hi-fi II range, a budget, compact range of hi-fi separates designed for great sound at a low price. The PreAmp II provides you with multiple sources to feed to power amplifiers. It can also be used to add wireless connectivity to active speakers.
This is a versatile unit with a wired digital optical input. It also has a line input that can be switched to take a MM cartridge for a turntable connection. There is also a 3.5mm aux input. The unit can also be connected to Bluetooth devices as well as Wi-Fi. You can then stream music from your smartphone, tablet or PC.
Good connectivity
The PreAmp II has a wide range of connectivity options. Digital inputs include wired optical input as well as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The line input is via RCA sockets and can be switched to take a MM cartridge. There is also a 3.5mm aux input. Finally, there is now a balanced XLR output for feeding each channel to a power amplifier.
Today, many more people are returning to vinyl and the new second generation PreAmp II, has a built-in RIAA / Phono module. You can now add a MM turntable without needing to add an external pre-amp.
Headphone output
The Tangent PreAmp II also has a good quality headphone amplifier built in. You can connect any good quality headphones for that classic tangent sound. The socket is conveniently placed on the front of the unit. There is also a sub-output for connecting a subwoofer to boost the bass response of your system.
Remote control
The PreAmp II comes with a fully functional remote control. The unit also has a wake up feature. The preamp will automatically turn on as soon as it detects a Bluetooth stream or a signal on the aux input.
The Hifi II range
The Hifi II range comprises the PowerAmpster II amplifier, the Tangent Tuner II radio and the CD II CD player. The PowerAmpster power amplifier is a compact but powerful unit with 100W per channel. It is class D. The amp can be switched to mono bridge mode and has a balance XLR input. There is also an RCA input.
Tangent Tuner II
The Tangent Tuner II (available separately) is both an analogue FM as well as a DAB tuner. It provides easy access to local and national stations and uses the latest technology. FM reception features RDS, and the sound is refined and clear. Dab and DAB+ stations lock in fast and have stunning clarity. Finally, a clear white text display gives you all the information you need on the station and the track being played.
Tangent CD II
The Tangent CD II (available separately) is a CD player with style. The compact form factor matches the rest of the series. The CD II can play all current CD formats including MP3 discs. The unit also has digital optical as well as RCA outputs. At only 7cm high this CD player will fit anywhere.

I was looking for a pre-amp with xlr outs to use with studio monitors, a unit that also had BT and optical inputs and would not break the bank. The Tangent pre-amp covers these requirements, has a decent headphone amp stage and seems a good quality bit of kit. I have compared the headphone out against my other 'reference' headphone amp using a pair of open backed Grados and closed backed Neumann NDH20's. I could not discern any difference in detail between the Tangent and my 'reference' system. This was using both the BT and optical connections from a phone and a CD player respectively. The big sales point for me though is the xlr output at this price point. As the pre-amp is compact it can be moved easily to my studio and the xlr outs mean it can be hooked up to my Nuemann studio monitors and sub system without having to mess about with a mixing desk and levels to connect up other sources. One box, pick a source input, and play straight into the studio monitors. Perfect!
