Synthesis Roma 96DC + valve amplifier is a stylish integrated amplifier, the best value model in Synthesis range with phono stage (MM), DAC (USB, S/PDIF and optical) and 25W per channel operating in Class A. Beautifully made, this amplifier is a simple yet innovative choice.
The output valves are EL34’s used in a push-pull configuration and preamp valves are ECC82 double triodes. Synthesis make and design their own output transformers. This is a good amplifier to use as the basis of a traditional system, as it has a built-in MM phono preamp. However, it also has a built-in Asahi Kasei AK4495S DAC chip for your digital sources.
25w class A amplifier
Roma 96DC+ is powerful enough to drive most speakers. The premium components and pentode output stage deliver a dynamic and lively sound with incredible musicality. The purity of voice and the accuracy of instruments are superb. Moreover the detail goes beyond what you would expect at this price range.
Custom output transformer
The output transformers of the 96DC+ are custom made by Synthesis. Modern materials mean that transformers can now be made, that vastly outperform older designs. The core is made of high grade iron-silicon for optimised frequency response. The quality of copper wire is also better nowadays resulting in improved reliability. This all enhances performance, bandwidth and reliability.
Versatile connectivity
The Roma 96DC+ has good connectivity with a range of digital and analogue inputs. Thera are two RCA analogue inputs as well as a MM phono input for your turntable. Digital connectivity is also comprehensive and includes coaxial and optical inputs for the premium Asahi Kasei AK4495S DAC chip, as well as a USB input for PCM data up to 32-bit. The built in DAC can support 24 bit files, making this unit capable of playing virtually all modern sources.
Why a valve amplifier?
Valve amplifiers are still popular with audiophiles. Their warm sound and classic looks have a lot to offer. Additionally, improvements in transformer design have led to much better performance than earlier designs.
They also have several advantages over transistor designs. One of these is power supply design. Valves operate at a high voltage. This means that for a given power the current draw will be lower. As a result loading on smoothing capacitors is lower, resulting in less ripple and hum.
Another advantage is linearity. Valves operate in class A and are inherently more linear than transistors. This means that there is less intermodulation distortion, caused by harmonics.
