Product Description
The Pro-ject MaiA DS3 is an all-in-one amplifier solution with a plethora of features in a compact unit. The high quality aluminium case is only 20 cm wide and 24 cm deep, but boasts 140 watts per channel into 4 ohms. This will comfortably drive most reasonably sized speakers. Digital compatibility is good with aptX HD and DSD available. MC or MM cartridges can be used with a switchable gain. There is also a variable output for a subwoofer.
Massive connectivity with nine inputs
The MaiA DS3 is a modern integrated amplifier with a massive range of nine inputs. Digital or analogue sources are no problem. The phono pre-amp caters for MC as well as MM cartridges and there are another three line level RCA inputs for your tuner or other analogue devices. All the terminals are gold plated.
Hi power class D amplifier
The Pro-ject MaiA DS3 is a class D amplifier. These are more efficient than linear amplifiers and generate less heat. This leads to a small form factor with high output power. Class D is digital in nature with a switched output that uses a digital signal right up to the speaker outputs.
Digital compatibility with aptX HD and DSD
Digital inputs include a coax and two optical inputs as well as a USB connection. The built in DAC is capable of streaming the Bluetooth aptX HD codec as well as DSD encoded music. Consequently, you can stream hi-res audio from your phone or tablet. Finally, there are line level inputs as well as an adjustable analogue outputs, for a recoding device or subwoofer.
What is the AptX HD codec?
The aptX HD streaming codec was developed in 2016, by Qualcomm. It provides the convenience of Bluetooth streaming without the loss of quality. If the device has the correct chipset as with the DS 3, Bluetooth can be streamed at higher resolution sound quality. 24 bit hi-res audio can be sent from you android phone. The codec is also being adopted by audio equipment manufacturers.
What is DSD?
DSD is a codec that was developed in the mid 1990s as the next level CD format. It is used with SACD and is a more space efficient way of storing music. There is now a wide range of music available in the format especially Jazz and classical music. CDs are sampled at 44KHz while the sampling rate for DSD is very high, at 2.8 million times per second. This is 64 times higher than a CD. DSD is considered to be the nearest sound format to analogue in the digital domain. DSD is measured by its sampling rate for example DSD64 and DSD128.
