Product Description
The Pro-Ject Debut Evo 2 Turntable is a mid-priced turntable that focuses on the aspects that make a turntable great. It has a technically proficient design along with craftsman build quality and is built to last a lifetime. The high-mass platter and heavy bearing ensure stable playback.
Additionally, the anti-skate force varies depending on the position of the arm. Moreover, the low-mass carbon tonearm is fitted with a quality Ortofon cartridge. Lastly, a premium phono cable interconnect is provided.
A quality platter and bearing
The platter on a turntable is important as the mass acts as a speed regulator. It also needs to avoid resonances and magnetic fields. As a result, the Pro-Ject Debut Evo 2 Turntable is damped with TPE and has anti-magnetic properties that prevent any interference with the pickup.
Another important feature is the bearing block, which must be stable to prevent the arm from twisting. The Pro-Ject Debut Evo 2 Turntable has a precision-milled aluminium bearing block that absorbs unwanted resonances and keeps the arm in the correct alignment.
Top-of-the-line anti-skate and high-end counterweight
The Pro-Ject Debut Evo 2 Turntable also features a damping ring on the counterweight to dampen any resonances. This is normally a high-end feature. Additionally, there is an advanced anti-skating device. This automatically adjusts the force depending on the arm's position on the record.
Why anti-skate?
The tonearm on a turntable tends to pull towards the centre of a record. This can cause uneven groove wear and distortion, especially on the inner tracks. Most turntables shave a method of countering this by applying a reverse force. This is usually proportional to the tracking weight. However, the Pro-Ject Debut Evo 2 Turntable changes the amount of force closer to the centre of a record.
Super stiff tonearm
The tonearm of the Pro-Ject Debut Evo 2 Turntable is made of one piece of carbon. This is super stiff as well as light in weight. Having less mass improves tracking as well as providing a more stable and convincing soundstage.
Premium Pick it MM EVO cartridge pre-fitted
The Pro-Ject Debut Evo 2 Turntable is pre-fitted with a Pick It Pro Evo cartridge. This Ortofon-made cartridge is a moving magnet design that features split pole pins. This makes it perform more like a moving coil design with a flatter frequency response. The cartridge is also a lightweight design.
Quality motor and belt drive
The motor on the Pro-Ject Debut Evo 2 Turntable is an AC type. It is mounted on a suspension system that reduces vibration. Additionally, the belt drive decouples the motor from the platter for even more vibration suppression. There is a simple toggle switch for speed selection. Lastly, the power supply provides a very clean sinewave to the motor, for superior speed stability.
Premium phono cable and grounding methods
One thing that is often overlooked is the phono cable that connects the turntable to your amplifier. This needs to be of quality construction. Additionally, it needs an external grounding wire with spade connections. Not only does the Pro-Ject Debut Evo 2 Turntable come with gold-plated phono connectors but it also comes with a low-loss phono cable.
Importantly the shield is only connected at one end of the cable. The yellow-marked side should be connected to the receiving end.
Grounding turntables
The grounding arrangement for turntables can get complicated. However, the main issue is the separation of signal and chassis ground to prevent hum loops. In the case of the Pro-Ject Debut Evo 2 Turntable signal ground is not connected to the chassis. Therefore without the additional ground wire between the turntable and the amplifier, there will be a lot of buzz, using the supplied phono cable.
With cheaper phono cables the ground is connected at both ends and should not need an additional ground wire.
