Product Description

Ortofon’s MC A Mono is a true mono MC cartridge for playback of mono recordings. As part of Ortofon’s exclusive series it uses Ortofon’s Replicant 100 diamond stylus and is built with the highest technology to provide stability, perfect tracking, low distortion and channel separation among other advantages.

Benefits of a Mono Cartridge

Playing a mono record with a true mono cartridge will provide substantial advantages to your sound, unlike if you were to play it via a stereo cartridge. With a stereo cartridge the two channels will have imperfections such as crosstalk, phase errors, tracking error, minor distortion and will sound uneven.

Because mono cartridges only produce one signal, which is then directed to both channels, it will deliver a much more stable and fuller sound. Another advantage of using true mono cartridges is the absence of response to vertical movement. This means that response to dust and dirt will be dramatically reduced, as the vertical component will not be heard.

Ortofon Replicant 100

Just like the entire Ortofon exclusive series, the MC A Mono uses Ortofon’s Replicant 100 diamond, which is known for its thin, low mass profile and large contact surface. Using the Replicant 100 stylus, whose shape is as close as possible to the original cutting stylus, will provide accurate tracking with a wide frequency range. Special polishing of the diamond stylus along with the use of a Boron cantilever delivers excellent transparency, speed and responsiveness.

Stylus protection guard

The MC A MONO is provided with a stylus guard that’s designed to be easily replaced and removed without risking contact to the fragile stylus assembly.

Range of compatibility

The MC A MONO is easily compatible with a most tonearms and modern high-end turntable equipment. The low internal impedance makes the cartridge less sensitive to load and therefore ensures compatibility with the Ortofon ST-80 SE transformer, as well as with a wide range of preamps and transformers.

MC A Mono’s Excellent Build

The MC A-Mono is built with the Ortofen’s most developed technology, just like the whole exclusive range, to ensure rigidity, stability, minimize distortion, allow for better tracking and for a higher degree of channel separation. All are important factors when designing a top range cartridge.

Selective Laser Melting

SLM was pioneered by Ortofon for manufacturing the successful MC A90 and the SPU A90 cartridges, and was refined for Ortofen’s top quality exclusive series. The SLM technique allows for extremely high internal damping, which provides the MC A Mono’s titanium cartridge with rigidity and freedom over vibrations within the cartridge body material.

Specially Designed Armature

The MC A Mono uses a specially designed armature to achieve extreme precision in each coil turn in all layers. This enables the cartridge to achieve a higher degree of channel separation, while simultaneously offering lower distortion and better channel balance. The armature is made in a metal alloy, which is much less magnetic than normal iron, which boosts the dynamic capability of the cartridge.

The magnet system

Inspired by the elements of the MC A95 design, the MC A Mono makes full use of the specially designed armature. This provides beneficial dynamic capabilities of the cartridge since the armature has almost no influence on the magnetic field during movement.

And any trace of remaining magnetic influences is prevented by the use of a FSE (Field Stabilizing Element). Ortofon’s FSE is a small cylinder of conductive material strategically placed inside the magnet system that guarantees the force field remains stable regardless of the movement of the armature. FSE improves the channel separation, while at the same time minimizing dynamic distortion and intermodulation.

Enhanced damping capabilities

Ortofon’s Wide Range Damping (WRD) is also used, which is a small, heavy platinum disc that is sandwiched between two rubber absorbers, both with different properties. This ensures exceptional tracking and perfect damping through the entire frequency spectrum. Because of this, distortion and resonance are virtually eliminated entirely.
