Product Description

The Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista Vinyl 2 Phono Stage is the flagship phono preamp in the Nu-Vista range. It is a highly accurate unit with ultra-high performance. Moreover, it can be used with both MM and MC cartridges and uses nuvistor sub-miniature valves for a smooth warm sound. Only the best materials and components are used and the heavy casework ensures no vibration or interference can enter the unit. High-end features include different EQ settings as well as a fully balanced design and a subsonic filter. Additionally, the outputs are gold-plated.

There Class A gain stages

Upgrades over the previous version include a fully discrete and balanced amplifier circuit. Notably, The Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista Vinyl 2 Phono Stage uses three gain stages using transistors. The EQ stage is also split into two parts. This type of circuit is difficult to design but provides the most accurate EQ curve. As a result, the impedance matching is improved. Moreover, there are another two EQ settings apart from the standard RIAA curve. EQ is also provided for Decca and Columbia curves as well.

Nuvistor Valves

After the EQ stages, the Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista Vinyl 2 Phono Stage features a separate board for each channel. The PCB holds the plugin nuvistor valves for the output stage. This makes the preamp fully balanced for the lowest possible noise and distortion. Nuvistor valves were developed in the 1950s as a way of competing with transistors. They are not much bigger than transistors and eliminate some of the problems encountered with valves. This includes improved reliability and longevity.

Why a discrete circuit?

Discrete circuits are composed of individual resistors, capacitors, inductors, and transistors. Active devices such as transistors and valves provide amplification. However, amplification can also be provided by integrated circuits (Op-amps). These have many thousands of components encapsulated in a single unit. This makes amplifiers cheaper to produce and easier to design. however, after many hours of listening tests, discreet designs have been found to outperform op-amp-based units. As a result, the Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista Vinyl 2 Phono Stage uses only discreet components.

About equalization

Since LP records began recording equalization has been used when a record master is cut. Normally, the bass is reduced to prevent groove overmodulation and the treble is boosted to reduce surface noise. However, Before the equalization curve (RIAA) was standardized in the mid-1950s record companies tended to use their own settings. Most stereo records have RIAA equalization but some early mono LPs do not. For example, Decca used less high-frequency boost. The originator of LP records in 1948, Columbia, also used their own EQ settings. As a result, the Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista Vinyl 2 Phono Stage has EQ settings for both as well as RIAA.

A fully balanced design

In a balanced design, the cable is specially arranged with a hot and cold signal wire. There is also a ground reference line. Each wire carries the same signal but in the opposite phase. When the signal arrives at the amplifier the signals are recombined. In a truly balanced unit, such as the Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista Vinyl 2 Phono Stage, any noise is eliminated by subtraction, similar to 2-2 being zero. Moreover, both channels need to have separate circuit boards throughout, as is the case with the Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista Vinyl 2 Phono Stage.

Unusually, the Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista Vinyl 2 Phono Stage has two inputs. Notably, both the RCA and XLR outputs can be used simultaneously. There are also connections for an external power supply upgrade. Notably, there are four gain settings for both MM and MC cartridges. Finally, subsonic filters are available.
