Martin Logan

Martin Logan have specialised in electrostatic loudspeakers for over 40 years. The present range starts with the Electromotion range (ESL and ESL X), through to Masterpiece range - including active models and goes upto the flagship Neolith.

All the models use Martin Logan’s proprietary technology to achieve remarkable performance and exemplary sound quality. As well as passive loudspeaker models, the active versions feature built-in Class D amplifiers and sophisticated control software – including DSP and Anthem’s ARC.

DSP stands for Digital Sound Processing and is a mixture of software and hardware, while ARC stands for Active Room Correction. ARC uses a microphone to monitor the live sound and compensate for any room effects that degrade the sound – once calibrated, any effects of the room on the sound should practically be eliminated.

Some argue that electrostatic speakers can produce the most accurate sound. The technology has been around for one hundred years, however it has only been recently that materials technology has enabled them to achieve their full potential. Original diaphragms sounded fantastic but weren’t built to last and also tended to lack bass and be very directional.

To solve most of the common problems with electrostatic panels, Martin Logan started with the panel itself. One of the problems was the beaming effect, to prevent this they developed the curvilinear shape. This creates a wide dispersion pattern, making the listening position less critical.

Next, for reliability, the diaphragm is made of modern plastic film. This is sandwiched between two metal plates known as stators. The driver transformers also use modern materials. Finally to give more bass woofers are built in the cabinet under the electrostatic panel. The result is a balanced sound with lots of detail.
