You can also stream from online sources such as Spotify using the HEOS app. Lastly, the Marantz Cinema 50 AV Receiver can be upgraded with the Dirac Live room calibration system.

HDMI connectivity

Six HDMI inputs are provided with the Marantz Cinema 50 AV Receiver. These are capable of passing through 8K HD video and are HDCP 2.3 compatible. Moreover, eARC is available so that you can control the volume of the receiver using your TV's remote control. Next, there are three HDMI outputs for connecting display devices such as TVs and projectors. Finally, The built-in AV system can decode Dolby Atmos, DTS:X as well as IMAX enhanced.

Audio connectivity

Analogue audio connectivity is excellent with six RCA inputs as well as a MM phono input. Digital connectivity includes two coaxial and 2 optical digital inputs for CD or Blu-ray players. Moreover, there are 4 subwoofer outputs and preamp outputs that can be fed to more amplifier units. Finally, the 11 speaker outputs use quality gold-plated binding posts.

About Home cinema systems

There is a complex array of different speaker arrangements and encoding methods for surround sound. Notably, the Cinema 50 AV Receiver can be used to create five speaker setups as well as the more advanced Dolby Atmos systems. The simplest 5.1 system comprises a front left and right pair of speakers along with a centre speaker.

There are also two rear surround speakers and a subwoofer. However, Dolby Atmos can use up to 16 channels. The extra channels are used for height and side information and create an immersive 3D sound field. Notably, the Marantz Cinema 50 AV Receiver can be utilized to make a 9.4 system. This comprises nine speakers along with 4 subwoofers

Surround encoding methods

Dolby Surround was the first surround system to be used in the home. Not including the old Quad system that was used on records. It was provided with some stereo VHS tapes and gave a rudimentary low bandwidth surround signal that was decoded using Dolby Prologic-equipped AV receivers.

However, things improved when DVDs came out in 1997. Dolby Digital 5.1 had 5 channels that had much better quality and separation. It also had a low-frequency effects channel for a subwoofer. At around the same time rival systems were developed such as DTS. Today the ultimate home cinema systems use Dolby Atmos.

About Dolby Atmos

The Marantz Cinema 50 AV Receiver is capable of decoding Dolby Atmos soundtracks as well as providing the necessary amplification to drive multiple speakers. It can also decode DTS signals. Dolby Atmos systems have a front left and right set of speakers as well as a centre channel. Next, there are two rear surround channels as well as two side surround channels.

Additionally, there are height channels that are used to drive ceiling speakers. The Marantz Cinema 50 AV Receiver can also drive four subwoofers for Earth shaking bass. Dolby Atmos works by having discreet sound “objects” that can be placed anywhere in 3d space.
