Product Description

The Marantz Cinema 40 AV Receiver is an 11-channel cinema receiver that can be used to create 9.4 systems. This is the flagship of the cinema receiver range and is of reference standard. Each channel has 125 Watts of power and the processor section features Dolby Atmos as well as DTS:X.

There are also HDMI inputs with 8K capability and you can stream using the HEOS app. Lastly, the Marantz Cinema 40 AV Receiver can be upgraded with the Dirac Live room calibration software.

HDMI connectivity

The Marantz Cinema 40 AV Receiver has no less than 7 HDMI video inputs. They are also eARC compatible so that your TV remote can control the volume of the unit. You can also assign HDMI inputs to be 8K HDCP2.3 compatible. Next, there are 3 HDMI outputs that can be connected to display devices such as TVs and projectors. Lastly, there is a composite video input for legacy devices. The AV processor can decode Dolby Atmos, DTS:X as well as IMAX enhanced.

Audio connectivity

Audio connectivity is good with six RCA audio inputs as well as an MM phono stage. There are also 2 digital optical and 2 coaxial inputs for CD players and the like. Unusually there are 4 subwoofer outputs and preamp outputs that can be sent to additional amplifiers. Lastly, each of the speaker outputs features quality gold-plated binding posts.

Home cinema systems

There are many ways to configure a home cinema system. Surround sound began in 1940 with Disney’s Fantasia film. The simplest home cinema systems use five speakers with a front left and right pair and a centre speaker. There are also two rear surround speakers. The most advanced systems can use up to 16 channels.

These have height and side surround channels that create an immersive 3D sound field. The Marantz Cinema 40 AV Receiver can create a 9.4 system. The 9 refers to the number of speakers while the .4 indicates 4 subwoofers.

Surround encoding methods

Many ways of encoding surround sound have been used over the last 40 years. In 1982 Dolby Surround came along. This used a matrix system to add extra channels to a stereo source. Often used on VHS movies it had limited bandwidth. The first AV receivers had a Dolby Prologic decoder to decode Dolby Surround.

When DVDs came out in 1997 things had moved on and Dolby Digital 5.1 had 5 channels and a low-frequency effects channel. There are also rival surround encoding systems such as DTS that the Marantz Cinema 40 AV Receiver can also decode. However, the best current systems use Dolby Atmos.

About Dolby Atmos

The Marantz Cinema 40 AV Receiver can decode a Dolby Atmos signal as well as the aforementioned DTS. Dolby Atmos, with a 9.4 system has a front left and right set of speakers along with a centre speaker. There are also two side surround speakers and two rear speakers.

Next, there are four height speakers that are normally ceiling-mounted. Lastly, the .4 refers to 4 subwoofers. Dolby Atmos can have up to 128 discrete sound objects that can be located anywhere in 3D space giving an immersive 3D experience.
