Product Description

Linn 360 flagship floorstanding speakers combine 50 years of experience in home audio and the best loudspeakers Linn has ever made. They produce sound of great transparency and true to life scale. You will not believe you are listening to a loudspeaker.

These are four-way speakers, and the drive units feature a 19mm tweeter with a beryllium magnet, for low distortion. The midrange unit has a woven carbon fibre cone, and the two woofers are driven by Linn’s Activ bass system.

The beautiful, rounded cabinet also helps to give a wide frequency dispersion. Finally, this flagship version of 360 has the Exakt phase correction module built in. We also sell these speakers with passive crossovers and the Aktiv Bass module (available separately).

What is Exakt?

An upgrade option for this version of the 360 is the Exakt unit. Exakt is a kind of active crossover. It removes any phase errors inherent in multi-driver speakers. With multi-driver speakers the high frequencies, from the tweeter, arrive at your ears before the sound from the bass drivers. This makes the sound out of phase. The result is instruments that do not sound as they should. Linn has developed a system that removes the phase variation.

The art of invisible speakers

The aim of any speaker manufacturer is to reduce distortion and colouration. This makes the speaker audibly invisible. To do this Linn employs advanced materials science as well as many years of know-how. This is coupled with Linn’s existing technologies such as Space Optimization and Exakt. Space age technologies are also used, such as beryllium for the tweeter, as used by NASA.

NASA derived tweeter dome

The tweeter in the Linn 360, is the first from Linn to feature a beryllium dome. This 19mm unit was developed by Linn. Notably, all of the inherent distortion produced by the dome has been pushed beyond the range of human hearing. As a result, the treble is clean and transparent.

Another advance is the woven carbon fibre midrange driver. This material was developed for NASA’s Mars rovers. It has the perfect mix of stiffness and lightness. An aluminium alloy is used for both the tweeter and midrange unit. This combination of materials gives a precise piston-like motion without any deviation.

Powerful active bass

The bass drivers of the Linn 360 have a larger range and more than double the excursion of previous versions. They are also driven by an active Class D / DAC amplifier. This methodology gives realistic and distortion free bass. The bass can be pushed loud while control is maintained. The DAC / amplifier combination was designed in house and the signal path remains digital right up to the driver. The advantage is less noise. For example, linear amplifiers tend to introduce noise. This becomes more noticeable at high volumes. However digital amplifiers do not generate noise and they actually get better at high volumes.

360 Array

Linn has developed an all-new adaptive bias control, known as the 360 array. This adaptive bias control eliminates distortion from the amplifiers, by using real-time measurement techniques. Dynamic management and correction ensure the drivers deliver optimum performance, from all types of music at all listening levels and at all times.

Exakt for optimised driver phasing

The 360 speakers feature the Exakt active crossover system. This system removes the phase errors inherent in multi-driver speakers. Normally, the sound from the tweeter arrives at the listening position, before the sound from the bass driver. This phase error makes instruments sound incorrect. The Exakt system corrects the error, making the music flow without any colouration.

Cabinet design for excellent frequency dispersion

The curvaceous cabinet of the Linn 360, is designed to give good frequency dispersion. This is achieved by having driver mounts that have shaped radii. These are specifically matched to each individual drive unit. The result is a speaker that gives a precise delivery from all directions.

The rounded form of the cabinet is made of 3D laminates and is extremely robust. The curves reach right around the sides of the speaker. Moreover, concentric rings are machined into the tweeter protector. This is reminiscent of Linn’s Turntable heritage, resembling the grooves of a record. Finally, the drive unit trim also performs a dispersion function. They incorporate waveguides that guarantee optimum performance.

50 years of Linn

Linn was founded in 1973 by Ivor Tiefenbrun . The first product was the legendary Linn Sondek LP12 turntable. This ground-breaking turntable demonstrated that the source component could be as important as the speakers in determining the sound quality of a system. Rather than relying on technical measurements, Linn still uses the 'demonstrate and listen' method to select components based on the sound, not the specification. The 360 speakers are the finest loudspeakers Linn has ever made and the closest to having no loudspeaker in your listening room, purely the music.
