Product Description
KEF R7 Meta speakers are a real sweet spot in the floorstanding speaker options in the latest R-series range, with more accommodating cabinet sizes compared to the larger R11 Meta, but with the ability to go deeper than the R5 Meta and fit in the majority of living rooms.
This latest R7 Meta version has been upgraded with a revolutionary new metamaterial, added to the tweeter design to reduce distortion. As with the rest of the R series, the R7 Meta uses KEF’s unique Uni-Q driver. The Uni-Q driver is a combined tweeter and mid range unit that has a wide dispersion pattern. As a result the sound can be heard properly from more locations in the room. In addition to the Uni-Q driver the R7 has two 165mm bass units with a design and cabinet structure that is made to deliver a clean and uncoloured sound.
Metamaterial Absorption Technology
MAT (Metamaterial Absorption Technology) was developed in association with Acoustic Metamaterials Group. Meta material is defined as a material that exhibits characteristics foreign to the solid from. In this case ABS plastic has been moulded into a shape that goes behind the tweeter. The characteristics have been changed so that it acts as an almost perfect sound absorption material. In this way distortion is reduced and the sound should be more natural.
Uni-Q Driver Array
The R series uses the unique Uni-Q driver array. With this unit the tweeter and midrange cones are in one assembly. As a result, this single point source distributes the sound evenly throughout the room. There has also been an upgrade to the motor system that drives the diaphragm. The pole has been modified and symmetrical aluminium demodulation rings have been added. In this way voice coil variations are damped for cleaner vocals.
165mm Bass Units
The R series uses bass drivers with a two part cone. An underlying paper cone is covered with a concave aluminium skin. These two components make for a very stiff structure. As a result resonances are reduced. Additionally, the strong pistonic movement makes the drivers time well with the Uni-Q array. There is also a new magnet system that improves the evenness of the magnetic field. Finally, the suspension has been re-engineered to reduce distortion for a cleaner sound. These improvements provide a tight punchy bass with low colouration.
Rigid Cabinets
The R7 Meta has a cabinet design that uses Constrained Layer Damping bracing. This type of bracing is joined to the cabinet by a material that dissipates unwanted vibrations. The bracing creates a very inert platform. As a result the drivers have a solid and vibration free platform. This gives accurate sound and low colouration. Three finishes are available, black gloss, white gloss and Walnut
