What is a 7.2 system?
Later versions of Dolby Digital, and other encoding systems, can carry seven channels of audio as well as upto 2 bass (or low frequency LFE) channels. The JBL MA710HP has the required decoding circuity to provide the following speaker feeds. A front left and right channel, two rear surround channels, a centre channel, and two side channels. There are also two subwoofer outputs, so overall you can create a 7.1 or 7.2 system. This AV receiver can also be used to create a simpler 5.1 or 5.2 system.
Surround sound encoding methods
Since surround sound began in cinemas in the 1940s, there have been many encoding methods used. Today there are two main systems Dolby Digital and DTS. The JBL MA710HP can be used with both Dolby Digital and DTS sources. DTS stands for Digital Theatre System. The first home system was Dolby Surround which had limited bandwidth. Later came Dolby Digital which at first had five channels, later versions added more outputs.
Dolby Digital and DTS
The main difference between Dolby Digital and DTS is the sampling rate. DTS Has a higher sampling rate, however, Dolby Digital is thought to be more advanced in it's encoding methods. Both systems Have 3D surround capabilities, with Dolby Atmos and DTS X. Dolby Digital was first used in the 1990s and the latest iterations of these formats are featured on the JBL MA710HP.
The JBL Stage speaker range
JBL launched this model along with the other MA models at the same time as their JBL Stage loudspeaker range. For the front left and right pair there are floor standers or bookshelf speakers on optional stands. The bookshelf speakers can be used as the rear and surround speakers. A well-specified centre speaker is available with four bass drivers. Lastly, two sizes of subwoofer are available, along with optional up-firing Atmos speakers.
