About home cinema systems
The JBL MA310 5.2 Channel 4K AV Receiver can be used to create a five-channel home cinema system with one or two subwoofers. This comprises a left and right front pair of speakers as well as two surround speakers and a centre channel. Two subwoofers can be connected, with one being for bass-related sound effects. This is known as the LFE channel or Low-Frequency effects.
Surround sound encoding methods
Surround sound began with quadrophonic four-channel audio in the 1960’s. However, the first home system for surround sound was named Dolby Surround. The signal was encoded with the standard stereo signal and provided a centre and surround channel with limited quality. AV receivers of the time had a Dolby Prologic decoder to recover the extra channel. Then later on in the 1990s, Dolby Digital came into use. This has 5.1 discreet channels that have greater bandwidth and more detail. Dolby Digital soundtracks are still included on most DVDs and Blu-rays. Lastly, a rival to Dolby appeared in the form of DTS sound, this has a higher bitrate and is available on some disc formats.
The latest version of these sound formats are included in this model as featured on many blu-rays, 4K UHD discs and streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple TV etc.
The JBL AV and speaker system
There are three AV receivers, with up to nine channels, in the JBL range. Additionally, there are bookshelf, surround and centre speakers available as well as stands. The available speakers include large floor standers and a bookshelf pair along with stands. There are also upward-firing surround speakers for Dolby Atmos systems.
