Product Description

JBL L100 Classic Black Edition are a limited edition release of the L100 Classics with an all black gloss finish, black Quadrex grilles and acoustic tweaks for even better performance. Like the Black Edition of the L52 and L82 released at the same time, this release will only be available for a limited time.

The Classic JBL L100 loudspeaker was first released in 1970. It became JBL’s best selling speaker. The new wood iteration of these speakers has been hugely popular and this latest version is a beautiful alternative to the standard wood finish.

They have a stylish and sophisticated new look along with a new performance package. This includes acoustic refinements to the drivers as well as an upgraded crossover. The L100 is a three-way design with a 12” woofer and a high gloss black finish. Special edition gold badges mark this as a unique edition speaker.

L100 Classic Heritage

The new L100 Classic honours the original by maintaining the same look but uses new drive units and a modern crossover. The cabinet itself has been upgraded with a stiffer construction. It can now handle modern dynamics and imaging. The sound of the special edition has been optimally improved, making them unique within the classic series loudspeaker range.

The Classic series are undoubtedly popular, but their retro walnut finish and brightly coloured grills may not be to everyone's taste. As a result, the black Edition Appearance Package brings the Classics into the modern age. The elegant black finish transforms the look, with a mirror like high gloss black finish. This is a very labour intensive process with many steps. The high gloss process also enhances the subtle radius of the cabinet edges.

The L100’s black cabinet is enhanced with gold labels on the front, around the attenuator control, and on the rear, above the input terminals. Finally, the special editions also have unique Gold JBL badges, on the Quadrex foam grilles.

Updated Woofer and Crossover

The performance package has seen upgrades to the woofer design with improvements to the linearity and level of distortion. Additionally, the tweeter and midrange drivers now have higher levels of performance. Moreover, the crossover design now includes dual sets of binding posts for bi-wiring applications. The gold plated terminals can take any kind of cable or connector.

The woofer is a 12” unit with a pure pulp cone. This has been improved with dual spiders and a bigger magnet. As a result the response is faster for more impact and deeper bass. The mid range is a 5 1/4” unit with a smoother response. Finally, the tweeter is a 1” unit with a titanium dome and a soft surround. The recommended amplifier power is 25-200W. There are also attenuators for the mid and high range drivers.

Who are JBL?

JBL was founded in the U.S. by James B Lansing, hence the initials JBL. The company began by making loudspeakers in the midst of the 1930’s depression. Times were hard and the eight and six inch loudspeakers were mostly sold to radio manufacturers. A few larger speakers went into luxury console radios.

By the 1950’s JBL were making the first 4” high frequency compression drivers with a frequency response up to 9kHz. These were complemented by the famous bullet tweeter, the 075 Ring Radiator Driver. At about this time, JBL speakers began to be used for the renowned Fender Guitar amplifiers.

JBL entered the professional market in the 1970s with studio monitors. They rapidly became a market leader. By the 1980’s they pioneered the use of Titanium in high frequency drivers. This was also the time that the Cabinet series of PA speakers entered the market. These became the choice speaker for musicians as well as clubs and churches. Today JBL continue to make the best professional and domestic speakers on the market.
