Product Description

Focal Clear Headphones is the next evolutionary step in the realm of high-end, open-back reference listening headphones.

Details in Sound

The completely open back speaker provides unparalleled respect for dynamics. Clear offers extremely realistic listening. The aluminium magnesium alloy M-profile dome is an ideal combination of  highly rigid, low weight, and with excellent damping characteristics.

This allows high frequencies to be linear while transients are appreciated in entirety. These headphones have the potential to reveal the minutest details in a recording bringing you the soul of your music. Unmatched insight and crescendos are the signatures of this striking pair of headphones.

Alloy Dome Tweeter

This model sits above the Focal Elear and just under the Utopia headphone models utilising the same aluminium magnesium alloy dome tweeter as the former whilst supporting an advanced frameless copper voice coil. As a result, performance features controlled bass with exceptional linearity from the high-end, all driven by an augmented magnetic field for highly defined vibrant characteristics.

Focal Technologies

Developed in Focal's workshops located in France, Clear is inspired by the superlative engineering and developments of the Utopia headphones. This lends Clear the extraordinary performance of elite full-range speakers, revealing the smallest niceties of the melodic formation.

The innovative assembly of Clear exceeds even Elear in terms of openness, negating the theory of headphones reducing listening space while making you forget that you are even wearing them.

Ear Cushions

The micro-fibre ear cushions result in a level of openness unparallel at this price point. The outer edge features micro-perforations of 1mm diameter which creates an impression of a very open space so you feel more like you're listening in a spacious room and less like you're listening through headphones.

Distinguished Design

The focal points of Clear’s aesthetics are the leather headband and aluminium yoke which deliver iconic styling reminiscent of prior models. The classy headband design and shape enables a comfortable fit for all head sizes. The headphones are supplied with a selection of detachable cables for every listening situation, and a hard case for storage and transport.

So what can I say - fantastic headphones basically. I was looking for detail resolution, and these certainly have that one in spades - they are effortlessly fast and resolving, but they do most things excellently, and have no real weaknesses that I can detect. The tonal balance is really very even, perhaps just a tinge skewed to brightness, but the bass extends deep, and it's proper, very well resolved bass too, the mids are not too forward or recessed, the treble also well extended, with plenty of air, and yet never piercing or overly aggressive. Not one for bass heads - I used to think I was a bass head myself, but I find what I really wanted is what the Clear has, which is well proportioned bass, and which extends to the deep end. Imaging is pin point, separation fantastic, and they also convey differences in distance to the recording microphone(s) very well indeed. The sound-stage is perhaps not the widest out there, but it's by no means narrow, and the headphones have an overall airy, unveiled/unrestricted quality that still allows them to work very well with larger-scale music, such a ambient or orchestral. Actually, I've not found a genre they aren't great with. Percussive or natural sounds come over incredibly vividly, also vocals and acoustic instruments - the fast response must play a role in that. But I also like the listen to a lot of electronic music, and that can be fantastic too.

I use the Clear with an Audiolab M-DAC and this has proved a very nice combination (I've had a custom cable made so I can run the phones from the balanced outputs at the back). But a great thing about this headphone is it is easy to drive and will sound lovely from a wide range of sources. It deserves something decent though.

I will say that I'm aware there are more expensive headphones out there, and I'm happy to accept that there are headphones that can do certain things even better than the Clear. However, I strongly feel that the Clear is a great way to get into that top tier kind of level, and that their balanced overall strong showing in all areas, plus ease of use and working well with a wide range of sources, make them a very fine choice and great value if you don't have the budget for the 2 or 3 grand plus stuff, and/or can't afford a top level dac/headphone amp. Regarding comfort, I find them very good, but I guess for people with ears on the large side they might just cause some issue (my ears are perhaps just a bit larger than average). Probably some things I meant to say but have missed - never mind, I'll stop here. :)
