Product Description

Emotiva Airmotiv GR1 headphones are high end open backs with a range of cutting edge features. Advanced graphene reinforced drivers are matched with superior construction and exceptional comfort. Sound quality is engaging and with a remarkably lifelike midrange and powerful controlled bass. Innovate technologies and high build quality should make these headphones an exceptional buy.

Excellent Sound Quality

Emotiva’s ethos is superb sound quality at an affordable price, and the GR1’s are no exception. The most important feature is the sound quality, and the GR1’s have a clean and clear sound that is detailed, smooth and punchy. Moreover, the bass isn’t muddy. The earcup grills are a cross between open and closed headphones. This gives the best of both worlds. As a result, sounds from the outside are muted while the internal sound is smooth and open.

Drivers and Earpads

The 50mm polycarbonate drivers are reinforced with graphene. This reduces non-linearities for a non-fatiguing listen. The replaceable earpads are made of high-quality perforated vegan leather. They are then attached to a rigid mounting ring that latches in place for easy removal. Moreover, they are filled with premium memory foam for maximum comfort. The headband is solid metal and has the correct amount of spring. Additionally, the click detents use proper ball bearings for a durable and long lasting usability

High Grade Cable

The GR1 headphones feature a 2 metre long, very flexible and cloth covered connecting cable. The internal wiring is also made of OFC copper. The cables connect via standard 2.5mm sockets one on each earcup. This means that each channel has a separate cable. Therefore, the headphones can be converted to a balanced system with a third party cable. Additionally, all the electrical contacts are heavily gold plated, and the connector bodies are made of machined metal.

About Graphene

Graphene is a new man-made material that has a unique atomic structure. The carbon lattice is very strong and can be used to improve a material's dynamic characteristics, in certain applications. In this case the diaphragm of the Airmotiv GR1 headphones. The diaphragm is made of a very thin polycarbonate membrane with a deposited layer of graphene fused to both sides. The lattice structure of the graphene results in a low mass, with controlled stiffness and improved damping. This is coupled with a low mass motor assembly. The result is exceptional clarity, linearity and low distortion.

About headphone cables and connectors

Originally headphones used 6.3mm or 1/4” phone plugs. These were mono and used in phone exchanges, hence the name. They eventually became stereo and are still used on professional amplifiers today. However they were quite bulky, and a smaller, 3.5mm version was developed. The 3.5mm size is the most common type in use today. Notably, newer smartphones often don’t have headphone sockets. They use Bluetooth to connect to wireless headphones. Some headphones use an even smaller 2.5mm connector on the earcups. These are used so that the headphones can be converted to a balanced system. More on that later.

Additionally, there are various versions of phone plugs. Known as TS, TRS, TRRS and TRRRS. TS stands for Tip and Sleeve. These are the original mono plugs. TRS stands for Tip, Ring and Sleeve, these are the standard stereo plugs.TRRS connectors have four wires with separate earth leads for each channel. Finally, balanced connectors are slightly bigger at 4.4mm and have five conductors.

Balanced Connectors

Balanced connectors need five leads, two each for the stereo channels and an earth lead. Balanced connectors work by having the two audio channels in opposite phase. That is each channel has a “hot” side and a “cold” side. They are sent from the amplifier in this way. When the signals arrive at the headphones they are recombined. The noise on each cable will be the same. However, when two anti-phase signals are combined the noise picked up by the cable is cancelled out. This allows for longer cable runs and a much cleaner signal.
