Product Description

The Denon SL103REM MC Phono Cartridge is an even more premium version of the SL103EM the new R version features 6N copper in its pickup coils. 6N copper is 99.999% pure and offers a lower resistance than standard copper. The result is a more precise sound and excellent bass. The original version of this cartridge came out over sixty years ago and it has been in constant production ever since.

Birth of a legend

Denon’s original moving cartridge began development in 1963. The SL103REM MC Phono Cartridge is an evolution of this design. It has a double-layer cantilever and a one-point suspension. This cartridge was used by the Japanese national FM radio broadcaster (NHK). Also, EMI and Decca used it as a reference for testing LP playback quality. This well-respected cartridge has a low output of around 300 microvolts and tracks at 2.5 grams.

Stylus type

Denon’s SL103REM MC Phono Cartridge features a 16.5-micron round tip stylus. This has accurate tracking and provides lower groove wear than elliptical types. Consequently, Conical tips are used with higher tracking weights.

Cartridge types

Simple Electrical record pickups date from the 1920s. The output had to be high and crystal or ceramic types were used. These converted the vibration from the record groove to audio by flexing a crystal or ceramic material. (the piezoelectric effect). The output was high at around 1 volt but the impedance was difficult to match.

When stereo records came out in 1958, some manufacturers sought a better solution. Denon developed a moving coil cartridge that tracked at a low weight and had a low-mass stylus assembly. This was more efficient at tracking high frequencies. However, the low output needs a good quality preamp for the cartridge to work at its best.

Preamp requirements

The most popular cartridge type in use today is the moving magnet type. These have a relatively high output of around 5mV and an impedance of 47K. However, some moving coil cartridges have an output below 1mV. The output of the Denon SL103REM MC Phono Cartridge is only 300 microvolts at an impedance of 40 ohms.

As a result, the preamp has to have a high input impedance to avoid loading the coils. Consequently, top-of-the-line phono preamps have variable gain and several impedance settings for different cartridges. They will also have balanced inputs to minimize any noise picked up by the cables.
