Product Description

The Denon DL110EM MC Phono Cartridge is a premium high-output moving coil-designed phono cartridge. The cartridge is unusual because it can be used with moving magnet phono preamps. The output is 1.6mV and the sound has a good treble extension with an open midrange and muscular bass. The elliptical stylus tip tracks high frequencies accurately. Notably, the tracking weight should be around 1.8g.

Cartridge types and the high output Denon DL110EM MC Phono Cartridge

Early record player pickups used crystal or ceramic elements to generate the audio. They used the piezoelectric effect where a ceramic material generates an electrical signal by being flexed. However, the impedance was difficult to match and they tended to degrade over time. Nowadays, the most common type of cartridge is the moving magnet type.

These have a tiny magnet that sits inside two coils. The coils generate the audio signal. The output level of an MM cartridge is around 5mV with an impedance of 47K. However, MC cartridges normally have an output of less than 1mV.

Moving coil cartridges

In the early 1960s, Denon began working on moving coil cartridge designs such as the Denon DL110EM MC Phono Cartridge. Moving coil cartridges have the coil mounted on the cantilever. This reduces the mass giving an improved high-frequency response.

The Denon DL110EM MC Phono Cartridge has a high-frequency pickup range of up to 45kHz. This is beyond the range of CD playback. Normally you need a special type of preamp for MC cartridges however the Denon DL110EM MC Phono Cartridge can be used with an MM preamp.

Pre-amp requirements

Top-of-the-line phono preamps can be used with any type of cartridge. For low output MC types they have higher gain and variable impedance settings. However, the Denon DL110EM MC Phono Cartridge is a high output type and can be used with the MM settings. Additionally, some preamps come with different EQ settings for older records. For example, most stereo records use the RIAA equalization curve. However, some early mono LPs used different EQ settings.

Elliptical stylus

The Denon DL110EM MC Phono Cartridge has an elliptical stylus that has a larger contact area with the groove. An elliptical stylus is narrower across the groove than it is from front to back. As a result, it tracks high frequencies with more accuracy. Moreover, distortion is reduced, especially on the last tracks of an LP.
