Product Description

The Denon AH-D5200EM Headphones are the best-value premium headphones in the range. They feature exceptional sound and a beautiful Zebrawood housing. Top-quality leather and memory foam earpads make these headphones a fitting tribute to Denon's 50-year history of headphone excellence. Notably, they have a connector on each earcup so a balanced lead can be used, as well as the provided top-quality lead. Lastly, The earcup material is designed to prevent resonances for a pure sound.

Zebrawood housing

Zebrawood is an exotic material that is used by the Denon AH-D5200EM Headphones for the earcups. It is not only beautiful but very dense. This tends to suppress unwanted resonances for a pure sound. Zebrawood comes from West Africa. Lastly, a high-quality cable is provided that plugs into the headphones and an amplifier. The lead provided has a 6.3mm plug however there is a complicated array of headphone connector types. More on this below. The headphones exert minimal side pressure and the memory foam gives a universal fit that is comfortable for long periods.

FreeEdge 50mm drivers

The Denon AH-D5200EM Headphones feature FreeEdge 50mm drivers that have high rigidity and low mass. These Japanese-made drivers are designed to minimize vibration and resonances in the diaphragm. As a result, the sound is detailed and accurate. Moreover, the drivers are mounted on resin baffles that reduce vibration. The material is soft and compliant. This allows the diaphragm to move with the music without flexing, giving a pure and uncoloured sound.

About headphone connectors

There are at least six different types of headphone connectors and they need to be matched to the headphones and the type of amplifier in use. Firstly the Denon AH-D5200EM Headphones come with a lead with a 6.3mm phone plug. These are the most common socket types for amplifiers.

However, you will need a 3.5mm adapter for mobile devices. Also, the other end of the cable has two plugs that plug into the earcups. This is so that a balanced lead can be used. Historically the first headphone connector to be used was the 6.3mm phone plug.

This was used in telephone exchanges hence the name. The cable had two connectors and was known as TS or Tip and Sleeve. When stereo came along an extra wire was added and the plug became TRRS. However, the 6.3mm socket was too large to fit on mobile devices so it became the 3.5mm plug with a similar configuration to the larger plug.

A problem with long headphone leads is noise pickup so balanced leads were developed. These have five conductors and a 4.4mm plug. This configuration eliminates noise by subtracting signals of different phases and needs a special type of headphone amplifier.

Headphone amplifiers

There are many dedicated headphone amplifiers as well as headphone outputs on standard amplifiers and devices. The main difference will be the provision of balanced XLR outputs for balanced headphones. Some may also be able to drive electrostatic headphones.
