Product Description

The Cyrus Classic Phono Stage is possibly the most well-featured phono preamp on the market. It provides accurate cartridge matching and inputs for four cartridges. Moreover, balanced XLR outputs are provided along with standard RCA connectors.

Musical performance is optimized by having individual settings for each input. The settings are gain, resistance, and capacitance. As a result, the best possible matching is obtained. There is also a switchable warp filter and very accurate RIAA matching.

Four configurable inputs

Four cartridge inputs are provided with the Cyrus Classic Phono Stage. This allows the user to have multiple turntables connected without having to change leads. Moreover, each input can have the gain, resistance, and capacitance adjusted to match as closely as possible the cartridge in use. Each input's settings can be saved to memory.

On-screen display

The backlit on-screen display of the Cyrus Classic Phono Stage includes output level meters that work in real time. This allows the user to match the gain of each connected cartridge. Additionally, the input settings are also shown. The balanced XLR outputs provide a low-noise connection to the main amplifier. The leads use three connectors that have the effect of canceling out any noise, especially on long runs.

Low-noise power supply

The power supply built into the Cyrus Classic Phono Stage has a high capacity and low noise. High capacity means that any loading will not increase noise. This provides a wide dynamic range with no clipping. Additionally, the noise floor is very low due to careful component placement and good PCB design.

Also, only top-quality components are used including metalized polyester capacitors that have a long life. Lastly, there is a port for an external PSX-R2 power supply that provides an even better performance.

Cartridge types

There are two main types of cartridges in use today, moving magnet and moving coil. Both have different output levels and other characteristics. Hence the input settings that are available with the Cyrus Classic Phono Stage. Moving magnet cartridges have a tiny magnet mounted on the end of the cantilever that holds the stylus.

The magnet fits inside two coils that pick up the sound from the groove. Moving Coil cartridges have the coil mounted on the cantilever instead.

Cartridge characteristics

Moving coil cartridges have the advantage of a lower mass stylus assembly however the output is much lower than with a moving magnet cartridge at less than 1mV. That is compared to around 5mV with a moving magnet cartridge. As a result, the Cyrus Classic Phono Stage has separate gain settings for each input.

That is not the end of the story, however. Moving magnets cartridges have an impedance of around 47K while moving coil cartridges vary greatly but are most commonly around 100 Ohms impedance.

What is impedance?

Impedance is a mixture of resistance and capacitance and varies with frequency. Resistor and capacitor combinations are also used to make filters. The input impedance of a preamp such as the Cyrus Classic Phono Stage needs to be able to match the cartridge impedance for optimal playback. As a result, the preamp has separate resistance and capacitance adjustments.

RIAA equalization

Finally, records are not cut with a flat frequency response they have boosted treble and cut bass frequencies. The bass is cut to prevent overmodulation of the groove and the treble is boosted to reduce surface noise on playback. There is a very specific playback equalization curve known as the RIAA curve. As a result, the Cyrus Classic Phono Stage has a very accurate playback filter.
