Product Description
Chord Epic AES/EBU cable is essentially a digital cable with XLR connections, as used in many professional studios and as featured on some high end DACs.
What is AES/EBU?
The (Audio Engineering Society/European Broadcasting Union) cable uses a professional serial interface that is used to transfer digital audio from CD or DVD players to amplifiers or tvs. It is normally used to send PCM or Dolby Digital 5.1, but can be used for any format.
Cable versions
There are two types of AES/EBU cables, and connectors. The ‘short’ cable run version, uses twisted pair cables and XLR connectors as with the Chord Epic AES/EBU cable. This is good in theory for runs up to 100 meters, although shorter lengths are available here more for hi-fi use.
In theory in studios for longer runs, the AES3id cable can be used, terminated with BNC plugs and uses coaxial cable. Runs of 1000 meters are possible with this cable. Although this is not an option with this Chord cable which is designed more for hi-fi use we mention this purely as an interesting point about this professional style cable.
Termination and shielding
It is terminated by shielded 3-pin XLR connectors, one male and one female. The cable has an outer braided sheath and uses, high-grade, copper twisted pair cables.
