Product Description
The Bowers & Wilkins 703 S3 Speaker has a bigger sound than the 704 S3 at a more attainable price. It features the iconic tweeter on top design along with a decoupled FST Continuum cone midrange unit and twin aerofoil coned biomimetic suspension woofers. The midrange is a 150mm unit while the two bass drivers are 165mm in diameter. Power handling is up to 200 Watts.
Solid body tweeter housing
The 700 series including the Bowers & Wilkins 703 S3 Speaker, all feature a top-mounted tweeter housing. This is made of a solid block of aluminium that resists resonances. It also has a more elongated tube loading system that provides a more open sound with sweet treble. The entire housing is decoupled from the rest of the cabinet.
Also, the carbon dome tweeters are purpose-built for the 700 range. They offer a dramatic improvement over the previous aluminium double dome units. For example, they raise the breakup frequency well above the human hearing range. This creates pinpoint accuracy and detail.
Curved cabinet baffle
The Bowers & Wilkins 703 S3 Speakers cabinet design features a curved baffle with a chamfered edge, this is designed to prevent standing waves from causing phase shifts in the frequency response. Moreover, each drive unit is housed in its own isolated pod. This stops any mutual interference.
Composite coned bass/midrange unit
The Continuum midrange unit in the Bowers & Wilkins 703 S3 Speaker is made of a composite material that is designed to stop abrupt transitions in the sound. Bowers and Wilkins use four key technologies to provide a natural and sweet sound. Voices and instruments sound full and precise with great transparency.
Bower and Wilkins technologies
Four key technologies are used in the 700 series. The first is the Continuum composite cone featured in the midrange driver. This optimizes vocal performances. Secondly. The FST surround creates a perfect blend between the cone and the surround. Thirdly the cones have biomimetic suspension and lastly, the midrange unit is decoupled from the cabinet.
Aerofoil profile bass units
The Bowers & Wilkins 703 S3 Speaker features two 165mm aerofoil profiled bass drivers. These are larger than in the 704 S3. The cone was developed using computer modelling techniques and has a variable-thickness cone wall. This provides stiffness as well as rigidity, where it is needed the most. The result is deep and dynamic bass with little colouration.
Upgraded crossover
A more complex crossover is used by the Bowers & Wilkins 703 S3 Speaker. Two-way designs only need a high-pass filter to feed the tweeter. However three-way units also need a band-pass filter for the midrange unit. The crossover is designed to split the audio Spectrum into bands this feeds each driver in turn.
The aim is an overall flat frequency response. The capacitors used have to be of high quality as they have to last decades without changing value or going leaky.
