The new models from Sony are both sector-leading featuring new and improved technology. Both units are 4k and have amazingly beautiful quality. The main difference between the two units is that the 590 is a lamp projector and the 790 is laser projector unit; both using new technology that steps up the game for Sony and makes these new releases unique among other models and price points on the market setting Sony 4K Projectors apart from the rest.

VPL-VW590ES

The new VPL-VW590ES is a lamp-based 4k projector. The 590ES utilises X1 technology, based on Sony’s original Bravia TV video processing and optimises it for projection use. The X1 uses high-precision frame analysis that works seamlessly with features like Dynamic HDR Enhancer and Super Resolution for high-quality images.

The HDR enhancer analyses frame by frame to give rich and enhanced images. The 590 uses SXRD technology; this offers rich, inky blacks and clear cinematic motion and image smoothness. It uses a powered focus lens with x2.06 zoom capability making it an extremely versatile unit in lots of spaces. It’s powered by a 280-watt High-pressure mercury lamp that produces 1,800 lm in high lamp mode. The 590 utilises Motionflow technology which adds frames to reduce blur while maintaining brightness, creating smooth and clear motion even in 4K – making the 590 ideal for sport and fast motion viewing.

The whole projector has an acoustic operating volume of just 24dB so you won’t even notice its there during quiet moments! The 590 has good connectivity and accepts a wide range of digital signals in addition to 2 HDMI inputs (Digital – RGB/Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr) . The unit also has a hardwire internet connection in the form of an RJ45 port so you can always stay connected to your network.

VPL-VW790ES

“Designed for your home theatre or living room, VPL-VW790ES provides an immersive home theatre experience with stunning detail and rich, faithful colour that make you feel as though you’re right in the middle of the action.” – (Sony 4K Projectors)

The 790 is a premium 4k projector model that is laser-powered at heart. The 790 has all the classic features of the 590 such as X1 technology, a Dynamic HDR enhancer and SXRD panel. The 790 has a massive light and colours output of 200lm all credit to the Laser diode as opposed to the lamp technology in the 590 and older models Sony produced.

Distinguishing the VPL-VW790ES is the adjustability of both iris control and laser independently and dynamically, to optimise light output for dark and high contrast scenes. The end result is deeper blacks and infinite dynamic contrast making every scene spring to life with detail and realism. The VPL-VW790ES analyses every pixel of every image and then employs pattern-matching algorithms developed over years of movie production to enhance crispness without increasing digital image noise.

In comparison with the VPL-VW590ES, of course, the laser vs the lamp technology is at the forefront of the two models. The 590 outputs 1800lm and the 790 boosts that by 200 outputting 2000lm (both measurements in high-performance mode). The laser diode in the 790 is also responsible for the lower power consumption in comparison to the 590’s lamp technology – with the 590 consuming 460w and the 790 consuming only 430w – making it very efficient indeed.
