Product Description
Audio Technica AT-ART9XA MC Phono Cartridge, upgrade to the AT-ART7, features a non-magnetic core for superior spatial representation. Dual moving coils are aligned in an inverted V shape, providing high separation and wide response for clear sound localisation and minimal distortion
AT-ART9XA Stylus
The Shibata stylus on the AT-ART9XA ensures accurate high and mid-low range reproduction while the 0.28mm diameter solid boron cantilever provides excellent response characteristics. A neodymium magnet and permendur yoke significantly increase magnetic energy.
Hybrid Body
Audio Technica AT-ART9XA has a machined aluminium base to support both the magnetic circuit and the vibration system ensuring excellent playback stability. The hybrid body of machined aluminum and high-rigidity plastic reduces undesirable parasitic resonance.
Performance
The MC Cartridge uses a redesigned coil armature which provides an output voltage of 0.2 mV (1kHz, 5 cm/sec). PCOCC coils are employed to ensure high-fidelity transmission. Threaded cartridge mounting holes allow easy installation to a headshell or integrated tonearm
Please Note: Moving coil cartridges require receivers or preamps with compatible inputs; their stylus assemblies are not field-replaceable.

I thought very carefully before ordering this cartridge as a replacement for my old and well-loved AT33EV, which was sounding rather tired. The output of 0.2 mV seemed very low and I wondered whether it would be enough and whether the higher output ART9-XI would be a better choice. However I went for the XA as the AT33EV had just 0.3 mV output, only 3.5 dB more and had been perfectly satisfactory. I need not have worried; there is quite enough for all domestic use.
After a few hours of “running in” the cartridge now produces a lovely sound, very similar to the AT33EV but even smoother and more detailed, and surface noise almost nonexistent on good clean records.
For information, I am using it in a Naim Aro on a Linn LP12 with Naim, Avondale and Icon Audio (valve) amplification, driving Shahinian Obelisks.
