Product Description

For their 50th anniversary, ATC has released a limited edition stand-mount loudspeaker. Only 150 pairs of the ATC SCM20ASL Limited Edition Speakers have been produced. The speaker features a two-way active design with a total power of 150 watts. The cabinet is finished in the luxury ATC company dark blue. Additionally, the front baffle is made of Napa Leather. Finally, the quality silver anodized components add a touch of class. The sound is smooth and clear.

Super Linear drivers

The ATC SCM20ASL Limited Edition Speakers combine two powerful amplifiers with a 150mm Super Linear mid-bass driver and a 25mm “S=Spec” dual suspension tweeter. The cabinet features a 20-litre sealed enclosure. The drivers are designed in-house and are well-matched to the amplification.

Two Class D amplifiers

A 250-watt class D amplifier drives the bass unit in the ATC SCM20ASL Limited Edition Speakers. Additionally, a 50-watt amplifier drives the tweeter. Moreover, an active crossover is used. There is also an all-pass filter that is used to optimise the phase response. The result is a much improved tonal balance and imaging.

Good connectivity

The main input for the ATC SCM20ASL Limited Edition Speaker is provided by a balanced XLR connector. This reduces the chance of any noise pickup. An input sensitivity control is provided so that the user can match the levels with any type of preamp or other source. Additionally, there is a low-frequency shelf control. This is used to set the bass to match the room. As the speaker has a sealed cabinet this compensates for the lack of ports. Lastly, the speaker is provided with a dark blue removable grille.

Why active speakers?

There are several reasons why active speakers, such as the ATC SCM20ASL Limited Edition Speakers, can outperform passive types. The first is more accurate crossovers. Active operation reduces crossover losses due to fixed filter load. Passive crossovers are made from capacitors and inductors and introduce losses. Next, The amplifiers are ideally matched to the bass unit and tweeter, leading to a more accurate response and dynamic range. Lastly, each of the amplifiers is operating over a limited bandwidth for lower distortion.

Why Class D amplifiers?

Traditional amplifiers use Class A or Class A/B. Class A types such as single-ended valve amplifiers operate in Class A. Here there is always a current flowing in the output device. This is inefficient and generates a lot of heat. It also uses a lot more current than Class B systems. Class B features two output devices and is biased so that no output current flows unless there is a signal. On the other hand class D is digital in nature.

Class D uses a train of pulses that are modulated by the audio signal. Class D can be over 90% efficient and is often used where there are space limitations such as a speaker cabinet. High powers can be obtained with a small unit that has a low heat output. Moreover, distortion is low.
