Ortofon has been making excellent phono cartridges and styli for over 100 years and is a world leading manufacturer of precision hi-fi products, including tonearms, headshells, high-end audio cables, along with turntable and vinyl accessories.

The majority of Ortofon’s products relate to analogue and turntables, and as the largest producer of Moving Magnet (MM) phono cartridges in the world, they have a long history of producing top quality products. Their products range from low-end budget cartridges, medium cartridges such as the Ortofon Quintet series, right up to high-end reference quality products and Moving Coil (MC) cartridges. Such is the quality of Ortofon cartridges that some turntable manufacturers choose to pre-install Ortofon cartridges on their products.

Ortofon was founded by two Danish engineers, Axel Petersen and Arnold Poulsen in 1918 as the Electrical Phono Film Company. The company was initially run by foresighted and experienced businessmen who supported the organisation financially, with the end goal being that they would explore the possibility of creating truly high-class recordings. In a simple surrounding, the two Danish engineers and their handful of staff set out to answer problems regarded as insuperable at the time.

Initially, Ortofon made soundtracks for movies, but in 1948 they moved into cartridge manufacturing with their first moving coil cartridge. Subsequently, the company have developed and manufactured more in excess of over 300 different cartridges. Today, Ortofon is a large manufacturer, marketing and producing their world renowned cartridges and hearing aid components.

It is thought that being based in a country recognized for its strong legacy in acoustics and numerous other high-end manufacturers gave Ortofon a competitive edge. Ortofon's key technological specialities are in acoustics, materials, technology and micromechanics which is facilitated by using their own engineers, supported by a sturdy network of acoustic experience, in their R&D department.

Currently, Ortofon employs over 95 people, with Ortofon products sold internationally with over 60 importers and Sales subsidiaries in America and Japan. Ortofon industrial unit in Nakskov in south Denmark boasts contemporary equipment operated by knowledgeable workers, so human craftsmanship is conveyed to consistently excellent standards. The company has advanced considerably over the last 10 years and now owing to their progressive technologies, they are in a prime position for exciting new business opportunities within the Medical industry.

Ortofon's successful growth and significant constructive impact on the local society has been commended by the then-Prime Minister of Denmark, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, who visited the Ortofon factory on April 27th 2015. Currently, Ortofon is working closely with DTU Mechanical Engineering within the EU Seventh Framework and Horizon 2020 Programme for Research and Innovation.
