Sony was founded by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita in the wake of World War II (1947) as a company called Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo. They built Japan's first tape recorder called the Type-G and in 1958 changed the company name to ‘Sony’ chosen as a mix of two words. The Latin word ‘sonus’ which is the root of sonic and sound, and ‘sonny’, a common 1950s slang term which connoted smart and presentable young men.
