Product Description

Sony VPL-VW550ES is a 4K, 3D and SXRD HD-Ready Projector capable of producing stunning 4K pictures with quadruple the resolution of Full HD, detailed colours and an exceptional 1800-lumen brightness as well as an impressive dynamic contrast ratio of 350,000:1

HDR Compatible

Experience an incredibly broader contrast and a vaster range of brightness levels with support for cutting edge HDR data. VPL-VW550ES projects content at up to 60fps in 4K for even smoother images with superior colour and realism. Support for HDCP 2.2 lets you enjoy the latest 4K content services.

Dynamic Contrast

Merging a lumen brightness of 1800 and a spectacular dynamic contrast range of 350000:1, VW550ES displays crisp 4K pictures with intense highlights and detailed shadows even in well-lit rooms. SXRD’s rapid response rate coupled with the Motionflow feature shows you every detail with least blur possible no matter the pace of the action.

Compared to a conventional projector, Triluminos precisely replicates a vaster array of colours resulting in excellently-reproduced tones and textures on top of exceptional clarity, depth and realism.

Cinematic 4K

SXRD delivers innate 4K resolution pictures (4096x2160) free from synthetic pixel enhancement. There are no jagged edges or perceptible pixel and each detail is concise and life-like.

Reality Creation

Upscale your Full HD Blu-ray or DVD movie collection to 4K with Sony's Super Resolution processing technology that enhances lower-resolution content and even upscales 3D movies to 4K resolution. Enjoy a near-native 4K experience with discs ‘Mastered in 4K’; closest possible to the 4K-pixel resolution and expanded colour range of the original.

Auto calibration

The set-up is quick and easy; built-in auto-calibration ensures superb pictures without effort. The projector's built-in RF transmitter synchronises with any RF 3D glasses for wider coverage and greater stability so there’s no need for an external transmitter.

Front Fan

Situated at the front, the projector’s fan bypasses the need for wall clearance when installing. This feature also affords a larger throw distance for larger projections. Lamp life is rated at 6000 hours meaning much fewer lamp changes and lower service costs.

A 2.06x powered zoom ratio and broad lens shift array enables more diverse installation option in any room and even in places with high ceilings. Store up to five zoom configurations with ‘Picture Position’ for future recall. These can be matched to a movies’ aspect ratio counting 16:9 Cinemascope.

Sony VPL-VW550ES is supplied with an RMPJ24 remote control, 2x AA manganese batteries, AC power cord for the projector, quick reference manual and operating instructions on a CD-ROM.

Press Reviews

  • 'Best projector £4000+' (What Hi-Fi Awards 2017)

  • 'Sony’s sophomore 4K HDR projector delivers stellar performance at a lower price point' (What Hi-Fi Magazine January 2017)

  • 'VW550ES fills our 96in screen with a sharpness and percipience that has you thinking twice about leaving the room without pausing.' (What Hi-Fi Magazine January 2017)

  • 'Even with streaming – innately not quite as clean or stable as the Ultra HD Blu-ray disc format – the Sony’s 4K performance is clearly head, if not shoulders, above the best Full HD projector pictures.' (What Hi-Fi Magazine January 2017)

  • '...despite the picture being pleasingly steady in the Sony’s default pose, we would make use of Motionflow mode – especially when playing Full HD material; acting like a blast of hairspray, and making things just a bit more stable. While in every other way the Sony is an irrefutable showboat, its colour palette is, to its credit, more focused on realism and accuracy than eye-catching saturation.' (What Hi-Fi Magazine January 2017)

  • 'HDR isn’t just about more colour nuance, but widening the parameters for brightness and darkness too. 1800 lumens is by no means spellbindingly bright in projector terms, and blacks are of a good LCD TV level rather than OLED, however the Sony never feels lacking at either end of the spectrum.' (What Hi-Fi Magazine January 2017)

  • 'Even when presented with the task of upscaling standard Blu-ray, colour balance and fine detail remain the Sony’s main concern to the point where they rub shoulders with very decent HD projector performances.' (What Hi-Fi Magazine January 2017)
