Product Description

SME Model 20/12 is a larger version of the well known 20/2. In contrast to its smaller brother, the Model 20/12 will accept both nine, ten and twelve-inch arms. This affords a performance approximately 27% greater than a 9" arm in regards to angular error distortion.

Magnesium Construction

The headshell and tonearm are pressure die-cast in magnesium giving a mass 27g lower than would be in aluminium. Arguably the most robust and lightweight 12" arms ever made, the effects of least tracking error and harmonic distortion are revealed with clarity. A turntable should resolve extraneous vibrations which result from many sources such as air and chassis vibration from speakers, groove modulation, technical flaws and deviant mechanical fields in moving parts.

Model 20/12 presents superb quality construction and is paired with vital physics. A heavier and more robust body gives it less flex and vibration; which can be shortened by suitable damping.

Density Matters

Significantly, Model 20/12 weighs 33.5Kg in relation to its size, which is ideal as it is density that matters. The same weight of metal dispersed over a big enough area would be aluminium foil! The subchassis is 20.5” by 14.75”, weighing in at 8.0Kg. The 16mm thickness evades flexing at low signals whilst attenuating high frequency resonance by abundant extensional damping.

How does it sound?

Model 20/12 has no 'aural footprint'. The sub-chassis is braced on 40 specifically moulded ‘O’ rings which guarantee freedom from feedback. A huge fluid-damper positioned centrally governs movement with a satisfying feel of security when handling records on and off the platter.

On top of a cartridge’s electrical output, mirror image sound signals responding in the arm and record, move into the sub-chassis via dissipation. The standard closed loop strategy does not resolve their differing phase so the Model 20/12 the build interfaces received extra attention to deliver paths of the necessary impedance.

This regulation of vibration is crucial to the design and contributes largely to the extraordinary tonal and dynamic realism that is demonstrated.

Key Features

- Stable four point suspension and trimming screws for suspension adjustment
- Subchassis suspended on 80 rubber strands (40 purpose moulded ‘O’-rings)
- Central fluid damper governs subchassis movement for resistive acoustics

- 19mm diameter chief spindle made from top-chrome steel in a closed oil bath
- Reflex fastening system and 6.5Kg platter with a disctinctive Isodamp face
- Adjustable ball feet with compliant inserts available as optional extra.
- Generous extensional damping and resistive loop structure for sonic neutrality
- 4 integrated jacking screws allowing offloading of thrust bearing for transit
- Driven by a 3-phase, 6 pulse, inductance motor with 8 pole Neodymium magnets
- Comprises 4 layer PCB with integrated user adjustable speed variation control
- Wide diameter strobe disc included enables accurate adjustment of normal speeds.
