It isn't often that Sennheiser overhauls their flagship premium models. The predecessor to the HD 800 (the HD 650) launched back in 2003, superseding the HD600 which hit our shelves way back in 1998. The all new design of the HD 800 is another step closer to personal audio perfection and the quest for the ultimate audible fidelity.
Sennheiser's HD 800 are true reference level headphones, open, circum-aural dynamic stereo headphones that redefine what reference level audio is all about. You will form an altogether new height of sonic perspective as you experience a high-fidelity natural hearing experience. Do take note that presently, no other manufacturer has been able to come up as close as the HD 800 in replicating the basic acoustic conditions of natural hearing.
More than 60 years of ingenious headphone engineering has been applied into the HD 800. Incorporating Sennheiser’s most advanced driver technology, these headphones' offer reference grade audio performance from their striking and visually effective industrial design.
The Sennheiser HD800 headphones are made in Germany using premium grade materials - the transducer is encased by a precision material made of stainless steel. The ear pads are handcrafted from a high-quality microfiber fabric, meaning the headphones are comfortable to wear and easy to maintain. The headband and headphone mounting utilises the most advanced development from the aerospace industry. In terms of connectivity, these headphones utilise specially-designed, four-wire, high-performance connections with Teflon insulation.
Truly, the HD 800 are a glorious success and have become a pioneer in headphone development. Crafted for perfection.

"Best Headphones Award." (Hi-Fi Choice Awards 2009)
"Very few loudspeaker designs can come close to the level of detail resolution offered by the HD800 headphones. Voices and instruments all have exactly the timbre that they do in real life. Sound is simply superb in every way, beautifully balanced across the range, thanks to the combination of sturdy but lightweight construction, high purity copper cabling and all-new diaphragms." (Hi-Fi Choice Awards 2009)
"Exceptionally comfortable; good design; solid bass; fine presentation." (What Hi-Fi Magazine)
"State of the Art dynamic headphones offering tremendous insight into the music and a captivating presentation." (Hi-Fi World Magazine 5/5)
"Bass was tight and tuneful, percussion was crisp but not searing, rhythmic bounce survived intact and there was detailed insight." (Hi-Fi News Magazine May 2011)
"The Sennheiser HD 800s are our champions...they win out for their combination of tonal neutrality and transparency - and they're also supremely comfortable to wear." (Hi-Fi News Magazine May 2011)
"A very, very fine pair of headphones from Sennheiser, and worth an audition. The Sennheiser HD800 headphones are a very different proposition from other headphones in this price bracket. They look quite conventional at first glance, but these are very far from being ordinary ‘cans'. The HD800s are designed for performance above all else. And they should be approached carefully if you have any need whatsoever to keep your musical enjoyment private (and thereby not annoy the family). Although the open-backed Sennheisers don't leak sound into the room with quite the abandon of some cans we could name, there's still enough spillage to cause an argument if a loved one is in the same room trying to read the latest ‘vampire romance' novel or whatever it is they read these days. And let's face it, when music sounds this good, you won't really want to turn it down." (What Hi-Fi Magazine Awards October 2013)
"The ultimate expression of the Sennheiser philosophy offers massive speed, clarity and insight." (Hi-Fi World Magazine World Standards)
3 Jun 2013Quite simply these headphones are extraordinary. Their ability to resolve detail and present the music as it was intended is way better than any other headphones available IMO.
Not cheap by any means and you will need to carefully match them to a suitable head amp to get the best out of them ,but once you have done that then you are in for some sheer unadulterated sonic pleasure.
I have heard the term Eargasms before and these deliver multiple eargasms believe me!
I have the Burson Audio Soloist head amp driving them and the pair in tandem is a marriage made in heaven. There is a synergy and a rightness to the sound I have never heard probably from any source and they score top marks with all genres of music.
Don't believe it when you read the HD800's lack bass! Driven by an amp like the Soloist their bass output is stunning as is the rest of their sonic signature.
13 Mar 2013I bought these not expecting to really like then given that I listen to rock & metal, not the genre's the HD800's are normally favoured for. However these are quite simply stunning headphones whose main strengths are speed, detail, clarity and bass depth and control. They are highly revealing of source and amp quality. When matched with high quality components they are quite simply one of the very best headphones on the market regardless of cost.
Highly recommended, if the rest of the audio chain is up to the task.
6 May 2012This is it. I can't imagine music sounding any more magical than it does with the HD800, they simply are that good. My journey here has been a long one, what started as a whim on a pair of Grado SR60s brought me through a wide selection of headphones including HD650s, RS1s and prior to these GS1000s. What the GS1000s deliver in smoothness and punch is matched by the HD800 with added clarity and wonderful spaciousness, such that I have never heard with headphones before. I am sceptical if the PS1000 can improve on these but until budget (and wife) permit (!) the HD800 take me closer to the music than ever before. I highly recommend matching these with a suitable amplifier as most amplifiers won't drive them properly - I'm running mine with a Lehmann Linear. Parting thoughts? Just buy them!
