ProAc Studio 118 compact monitors are the successors to ProAcs acclaimed Studio 115s enhancing everything that was loved about them and adding the essentials like the new, doped paper cone 6½” (165mm) bass midrange driver with revised magnet, voice coil assembly and the inclusion of a phase plug.
Paper cones have been used in high quality loudspeakers for many years and their technical behavior intensively cross-examined, making them most reliable. The bass midrange driver produces deep, natural bass without compromising on a detailed and uncoloured midrange which older models struggled to do. This new driver gives the Studio 118 a deeper and cleaner bass response with a more open midrange and even improved dispersion characteristics.
The cabinet size remains unchanged from its predecessors with internal bitumous damping panels and a centrally located port tube on the front baffle for bass loading. The narrow front baffle design of the Studio 115 has been retained to aid dispersion and produce a large soundstage. The tweeter is ProAc’s proven ¾” (20mm) soft dome unit.
Marrying these two drivers together seamlessly is a high quality crossover network featuring the highest quality components, all split via high quality speaker terminals for optional bi-amping or bi-wiring. The 118 is excellent for all types of music and more efficient than previous models, which make it suitable for lower powered valve and transistor amplifiers.
The ProAc Studio 118 also comes in a variety of real wood veneers and the sound quality belies the size of the enclosure.
15 May 2015Popped into Audio Affair for a mooch, not expecting the part with any money, but when I heard these I was blown away!! The scale, depth and even height is remarkable for a bookshelf speaker at this sort of money and a big step up from my old Monitor Audios. After a couple of hours of listening (and being left to my own devices - kudos to this dealer), I bought a pair! If youre considering new speakers, make a visit and listen to these!
