Product Description

The Pro-Ject Acoustics Xtension 9 is an ideal solution for anyone who is looking for the exceptional sound quality of the Xtension 10 in a more compact, rack friendly size and at a more appealing price.

The Xtension 9 incorporates all of Pro-Ject's 20 years experience in turntable design.

Chassis
The chassis is made from MDF which gives a high mass and is non-resonant. But in addition the turntable also uses magnetic feet, which decouple the main plinth from its base. The result of this combination is a merging of the influential 'mass loaded' and 'floating turntable' design principles.

Platter
Instead of the old-standard adoption of pure metal for a main platter, Pro-Ject researched and uncovered a perfect alloy material, which has then be damped on the inner side with thermo plastic elastomers (TPE). Taking this base structure, they've then glued recycled Vinyl records to the top (which act as a perfect mat) and baked this 'sandwich' before precision balancing it. The Xtension 9 subsequently benefits from a wonderfully resonance-free, heavy platter, that runs ultra-silently on an inverted ceramic ball-bearing, with magnetic suspension.

Tonearm
The Xtension 9 comes pre-fitted with the Pro-Ject 9cc Evolution Tonearm. Constructed from carbon-fibre, the armtube is efficiently designed to lead parasitic vibrations away from the cartridge into the mounting board which guarantees the precise tracking of the record grooves by the needle and also facilitates fine adjustment of vertical and horizontal tracing.

Cartridge
Usually worth £649, the Ortofon Quintet Black comes pre-fitted to the Xtension 9. Graced with a Nude Shibata diamond, the Quintet Black is considered one of the best stylus profiles available, mounted on a high-performance Boron cantilever. The Shibata’s slim, highly polished profile allows an exceedingly wide contact area to the walls of the groove and ensures detailed and pure reproduction through out the spectrum, including even the most high frequency groove details.

Finally, the Xtension 9 is also supplied with a beautiful dustcover with adjustable hinges, and is available in three high-gloss lacquer finishes.

Press Reviews

  • 'The Xtension 9 Evolution Super Pack is yet another combination of which Pro-Ject and Henley Designs can be proud. The careful downsizing of the original Xtension design, plus the addition of an updated tonearm that incorporates immediately obvious improvements, results in a turntable combination with few vices. Add in a superb cartridge at a discounted price and the result is a veritable bargain.' (HiFi News Highly Recommended)

  • 'A well designed arm and cartridge, plus a good quality drive system and heavy platter should also be a recipe for a good bass performance and so it generally proved to be with the Pro-Ject. As per the rest of the frequency range, there was a pleasing sense of quiet competence in the way in which the deck approached the lower end of the frequency spectrum.' (HiFi News Highly Recommended)

  • 'I was pleased to hear that the Xtension 9 Evolution Super Pack exhibits that certain indefinable sonic "rightness" that generally characterises the upper reaches of the Pro-Ject range for me. I have always found them to be designs that offer no short-term sonicfi reworks or any kind of dubious superficial impressiveness that soon wears off. Rather, they make music in an understated and alluring manner that simply seems more and more enjoyable as different material is played. In the case of the Xtension 9, I was immediately struck by the superbly low levels of groove noise and general background mush. (HiFi News Highly Recommended)

  • 'Pro-ject kicked off its Xtension line-up back in 2009 with the Xtension 12, a relatively large deck designed to take 12-inch tonearms. This SuperPack sees the company’s more rack-friendly Xtension 9 Evolution turntable pre-fitted with the latest version of its one-piece carbon fibre 9CC Evolution tonearm plus the range-topping Black moving-coil cartridge from Ortofon’s Quintet series. The result is a turntable that sounds smooth and assured, yet is certainly no slouch when it comes to digging deep into the grooves in search of detail. Add clarity, crispness and a presentation that manages to sound solid yet punchy when the occasion demands and you have a turntable package that is nothing if not value for money' (Eisa awards 2014)
