Product Description

Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Esprit SB is an all-new product which goes above and beyond the multi-award winning Debut Carbon with 8.6CC carbon fibre tonearm, new power supply method, improved motor isolation and a pre-installed Ortofon 2M Red cartridge.

Enhanced Performance

Debut Carbon Esprit SB also features a new cable junction box as well as a totally new speed control principle which enables easy changing between 33 1/3 RPM and 45 RPM. It is able to spin at 78 RPM by manually adjusting the pulley to the larger rung and setting the speed records to 45/78 (we recommend a 78RPM stylus for the playback of 78RPM records).

New Motor System

As well as its convenience, the Debut Carbon Esprit SB's speed control system allows for smoother motor operation which further reduces unwanted resonances along with the improved motor isolation.

The new motor isolation system utilises a wholly unique rubber compound which was developed exclusively by Ortofon A/S in order to provide dramatically reduced resonance transference from the high-quality 9V motor.

Acrylic Platter

The acrylic platter upgrade which the Esprit uses also provides sonic benefits by offering virtually no resonance in the audible frequencies and negating the need for a slipmat which can sometimes cause problems and contribute to the build-up of static. The Debut Carbon Esprit SB is available in three stylish, high-gloss colours.

Two weeks ago I purchased this amazing turntable for my partner and has a second system along with a Marantz PM6005 from another dealer, she doesn't like playing records on my Inspire Monarch, Audio Origami, Micro Benz Ace set up, for fear of damaging the cartridge or disturbing my arm set up.

Richard at Audio Affair assured me that the set up on Pro-Jects was pretty much spot and he was absolutely right. The overhang was absolutely accuarte and to my surprise the azimuth and VTA were also calibrated perfectly.

The project is a beautifully made turntable, a well made plinth in a gorgeous white gloss lacquer, a substantial acrylic platter and an outstanding 8.6 inch carbon fibre tonearm. Set up is a doddle, 10 to 15 for me, half a hour for a complete novice. The factory fitted Ortofon 2M Red is pretty good cartridge that can handle everything from vintage well played records to brand new audiophile pressings.

The sound is pretty amazing from a complete package that costs less than £450. There's a great sense of space, great sound staging and excellent dynamics. The presentation is full of information and there is little if no distortion even close to the end of record. Bass performance is good, taught and rythmic and the high frequencies are very intergrated, something that I find hard to believe at this price, however it the midrange is the real revelation performing like a genuine high end turntabe.

I have only two minor gripes with Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Espirit SB, Pro-Jects use of the anti-skate weight which does work well however I would prefer to have more control. And the rather cheap plastic power supply with its rather thin and nasty cord, sadly there doesn't appear to be an after market upgrade available as of now. These two minor issues aside I can't really fault this package.

If you're looking for a first turntable to get vinyl with, or have a pretty good system and fancy something that live alongside serious audio without costing the earth this may well be prefect for you.

This is a fantastic product and at £425 an absolute bargain.
