Product Description

Pathos Ethos is a powerful hybrid tube and solid state integrated amplifier supporting a wide range of sources from balanced analogue XLR to digital USB. It meets demands of two-channel purists, while catering for those interested in using digital sources.

Ethos is based on the acclaimed Pathos hybrid circuit with valve pre-stage and MOSFET power stage, giving it the best of both worlds with a warm tube sound yet powerful 100W per channel. With its on board DAC, Ethos is also capable of importing 24-Bit 192kHz digital signals from other devices for playing high res music files with very high fidelity.

Fully featured with five RCA line inputs, as well as two balanced XLR inputs, Ethos also unusually but usefully features four video inputs along with its premium DAC, which supports digital input signals via two USB ports (Type A/B) and a S/PDIF RCA socket. Stereo pre out is included for future addition of an separate power amplifier as well as mono sub-out for potential use with an active subwoofer.

Given the power available, Pathos have included a relay protection system that mutes the sound until the amplifier is upto temperature (which only takes around 30 seconds). Also, very usefully, each audio input features individual volume control with memory that can be individually set, to ensure perfect levelling for sources of slightly different sensitivities.

Hybrid Amplifier

The hybrid design of the Ethos is based around a Class A pre-amp section which features a pair of 6922 twin-triode valves. The dual mono power amp section is solid state to deliver a huge 100 watts per channel (into 8 ohms) or a staggering 200 watts per channel (into 4 ohms).

Remarkably for such a design, its also possible to bridge the output to make the Ethos into a single-channel amplifier of 270 watts, although of course you'd then need to double them up for a stereo setup.

This amplifier weighs in at an impressive 20kg, with casework that features a combination of steel top and bottom plates, heavy cast-alloy heatsinks and front panel. As with other Pathos models, the heatsinks are designed in the shape of the "Pathos" logo when viewed from above which looks very impressive. Overall the build quality radiates high quality and class.

Sound Quality

Most importantly, thanks to its hybrid design and choice of very high quality components, the Ethos offers an excellent combination of immediacy and clarity. The sound has fantastic focus, stacks of fine detail along with plenty of power that'll drive even the most demanding of loudspeakers. The bottom-end is tight and powerful while the transient attack and wide dynamic range are all handled with ease and with no hint of compression. Valves in the pre amplifier section serve to add a degree of warmth and smooth refinement making the Ethos one of the best amplifiers at this level that we've ever heard.
