Louis Armstrong’s 'Under the Stars' was recorded at the same time as his 'I’ve Got the World On a String'. With some great soloing and mellow ballads, Armstrong’s brilliance is hardly more evident than it is on this album. The great trumpeter/singer is backed by a string orchestra arranged and conducted by Russ Garcia. He performs eight veteran standards, only one of which ('Body and Soul') was associated with him in the past. Although the accompaniment is pretty straight and unadventurous, it is enjoyable to hear Satch's interpretations of such songs as 'Have You Met Miss Jones', 'I Only Have Eyes for You', 'Home' and 'East of the Sun'. Many of his trumpet solos during the medium-tempo material are brief but dramatic, and his singing is typically expressive.
This is a 200 gram weight (!) high-quality and super quiet LP pressing from Classic Records as part of their 'Quiex-SVP' series. In contrast to many CD and LP releases that are mastered from fifth or sixth generation copies, Classic used the original master tapes and cut the album using their all analog and tube amplified mastering process; allowing every conceivable detail and nuance from the original recording to be translated to this pressing. The result is arguably the best sounding release of this album ever available, easily surpassing standard CD and LP pressings. As usual, Classic Records have lovingly presented the album in a deluxe package featuring a high quality thick original artwork sleeve and LP labels.
