Ultra HD 4K Players
These players are designed to play the latest Ultra HD discs. The first player to be added to this section is the Oppo UDP-203 and many (if not all) current 4K players will also play blu ray discs, DVDs, CDs, etc. This allows you to upgrade from your current blu ray or universal disc player and still play your existing collection, but enjoy the latest Ultra HD 4K discs in glorious 4K (providing you have a 4K projector/screen and suitable equipment - contact us if you need advice on upgrading to 4K).
Ultra HD or 4K is four times the definition of normal 1080P HD content. So rather than having an image which is 1080 pixels high x 1920 pixels wide (which is HD), 4K content has an image which is 2160 pixels high x 3840 pixels wide, which is - in effect, like putting four HD screens together two high and two wide. So if you haven't seen 4K content, or if you've only seen it when you're out shopping, you can imagine how awesome this looks at home with a proper sound system.
Many of the latest 4K players will also upscale blu ray and DVD content. Upscaling content first became popular back in the day of laserdiscs when enthusiasts would use line doublers that effectively doubled the resolution of the content being played by creating an additional line every other line by copying the line before it. Upscaling came back more recently with some screens and bly ray players and while its true to say that "if the information isnt there, you can't add it in", not all equipment that upscales is created equal and some upscaling technology will do a better job of enhancing image quality.
Although an upscaled DVD will never look as good as a blu ray disc and a blu ray disc will certainly never look as good as native 4K content, we've found that the better players from the like of Oppo do an incredibly good job at upscaling and will at least give you the option of selecting to upscale and enjoy non 4K content if you upgrade your system to 4K.
