Burson Soloist SL MkII is the latest version of this smaller, scaled down version of the award winning Burson Soloist. Soloist SL MkII exists for one purpose only, to be one of the best headphone amplifiers in the world, and at this price point, we think Burson may have just managed it. Pitching the Soloist SL MkII against the likely competitors at this level shows this headphone amp to be a highly accomplished contender, and much like Burson's other models, its exceptional value for money.
Just like the Soloist, the Soloist SL MkII is completely discrete in design. (IC free). It features the same 21 component Field Effect Transistor input stage and the same discrete power supply network which brought popularity to the original. Assembled with the same high end components and operating in pure Class-A, it carries the same sonic signature which has been described as the utmost in organic and transparent.
The Soloist SL MkII is housed in a refined and precision folded 3 mm aluminium casing that is unmistakably Burson. This case also works as a singular heat-sink for the entire machine ensuring stable and optimized performance at all times. This case really puts the conventional 1 mm folded steel case and generic heat fins to shame.
At 14cm * 8cm * 21cm it sits elegantly on any desktop. But with 2 Watts per channel into 16ohm, the Soloist SL MkII is one of the most powerful headphone amps in the world. It is capable of driving most if not all headphones to their full potential. Coupled with a 2 level gain switch, it offers infinite flexibility.
VOS and Volume
Like its bigger brother, the Soloist SL MkII features a new Variable Output Stage (VOS). It enables the Soloist SL to match well with any type of headphone. Be it easy to drive high sensitivity in ear monitors or open back moving-coil designs. It can drive anything including the latest planar magnetic headphones with ease. Combining the VOS with high quality ALPS Potentiometer, volume control is always smooth and synergy is always perfect.
Low Noise Power Supply
An athlete needs clean air to perform at an optimum standard – audio equipment needs clean power to reproduce transparent and natural music. Soloist SL has taken the already fanatical IC free power supply of our first generation HA-160 to the next level. The result is even cleaner even more energetic music reproduction.
19 May 2015This headphone amplifier has a LOT of power which makes it perfect for planar magnetic headphones. As such I actually find I can easily drive my HiFiMan HE-560 headphones on the LOW gain setting with the volume control just past the 12 o'clock point for most music.
The build quality is excellent, it feels solid and well built and the volume control is extremely nice to use with a very smooth action without feeling 'light'. Note this is a smooth potentiometer and NOT a stepped (clicky) volume control like other models in the Burson product line.
I have noticed that compared to my Schiit Magni 2 Uber, the bottom end of the sound is more punchy and defined. Very pleased with this purchase, I can see this lasting a long time.
Although it comes with a 24 month warranty as standard, Burson will extend it to 5 years by completing the warranty registration on their website.
4 Feb 2014This head amp has a simple design. 2 inputs, selection switch, volume and a variable output stage with selection for high and low settings to match with different headphones. I listen to my well loved HD650s through this amp and its a very good pairing, better than the Graham Slee Solo and Musical Fidelity M1HPA that I listened to before buying this. Burson is a lesser known brand, but for the purist its worth a listen and with Audio Affairs 30 day money back its a no brainer to try this. The only thing that might bother some is the stepped volume control if you want finer volume adjustment but there are a sufficient number of steps and the clicking of the volume has a reassuringly solid feel to it.
