Product Description

Burson Soloist is a headphone amplifier and pre amplifier (3 x RCA line level inputs) in one, a beautifully designed reference class creation, made to get the best sound and enjoyment of music from your headphones. This model bridges the gap between the Burson Audio HA-160 headphone amplifier (without pre amplifier) and Burson Audio HA-160D (with pre amplifier but without DAC), making it a perfect partner for upto 3 line level music sources if you don't require a DAC.

Listening Impression

With the wrong equipment, a violin performance often sounds thin, constrained and boring. But not with the Soloist. Reproducing a 1992 recording of Zigeunerweisen Op. 20 by the legendary Erick Friedman, and his staggering virtuosity can be fully appreciated. With eyes closed and minds eased, we arrive at a different time and space. Bold and determined, his six foot figure beside the conductor's podium. The composition was performed perfectly down to the most subtle detail. The way he lifted his solder to balance the bow, the bounce, the sounding points, they were all sustaining, all accurate and emotionally intense. His passages executed with fine-tuned precision. A great Soloist of our time whose spirit lives on through his music and his students.

Throughout the performance, the only thing that reminded us of where we were was the inherent tape hiss from this pre digital, pre Dolby era of recording. But precisely due to this lack of digital mastery and lack of noise reduction editing, that a fuller frequency content was preserved and it sounded more organic and mesmerising. It was a performance to soothe the soul, and diverted minds from everyday worries to the beauty and magic of masterfully performed music.

Power, precision, dynamics and unadulterated listening pleasure are all words to describe listening to the Burson Soloist, both as a pre amp and as a head amp driving my Sennheiser HD800's.
The Soloist has bought a solidity and definition to my system I have never heard before. It delivers clarity and dynamics in spades and unlike other head amps I have listened to it has taken the difficult Sennheiser HD 800's by the scruff of the neck and allows them to really boogie and perform to their real and extraordinary potential.
If you are looking for a potent combination of refinement and dynamics then the Burson Soloist and the HD 800's should be right at the top of your list.
Can I just say what a pleasure my buying experience was through Audio Affair as well.John whom I dealt with at all times was great with his advice and general help made the whole process a pleasure.
    Thank you!

This is a finely built machine conveying super refined sound to your headphones. I bought it a month ago to use it with my AKG K702. There is a true synergy between the two products which your (in this case mine) listening experience a mark of true sophistication. What I particularly appreciate in Burson Soloist is its unfatiguing character, at least in unison with my headphones. I haven't yet used it as a pre-amp, but i would expect similar performance and sonic signature in that mode too. It is hard to imagine a more mature sounding amp, yet harder one of a superior build. The attenuator is clanky but it works and doesn't 'pop' as some reports suggested. Low gain is only 0.18 which means very high damping factor and ultra low distortion. Highly recommended.
