speaker close up

An investment in some truly excellent floorstanding speakers is pretty much the key to completing your hi-end hi-fi system. After all, what would be the point of having a hi-end set up – the source and the amps – without the speakers to carry that rich, detailed sound from the system to your ears? If the speakers are poor – the sound will be poor, no matter how hi-end the rest of your system. But hi-end speakers can be dear – so we offer 0% finance on many of our makes and models, making them accessible to all.

As higher end hi-fi speakers, a good choice of A matching integrated amplifier or a pre/power amp combo is highly advisable. Please call us on 0121 224 7401 or email us for advice on suitable matches if you need help and advice. We can  also demo all of these speakers in our Birmingham showroom and offer generous part exchanges against your old speakers so an easy upgrade is a possibility.

1. Q Acoustics Concept 40 – £999.95

Q Acoustics Concept 40

A shade under £1000, but we won’t quibble over a measly 5p at Audio Affair. These elegant speakers are one of our favourite speakers in their price range. The floorstanding version of the multiple award winning Q Acoustics Concept 20 and are multiple award winners themselves. Built on ‘Gelcore technology’, which is a fancy way of saying a ‘cabinet within a cabinet’, these boxes are very low resonance which means, no matter how heavy the bass, they will never sound strained. These excellent value speakers Incredibly punchy and powerful with the clarity you would expect from hi-end as well. In terms of the aesthetic, they are extremely striking and impressive and feature stylish glass bases.

What do we think?
These are likely to be the best speakers you can buy for the £1000 mark. And the critics agree! If money is a concern, stretching 0% over 12 months won’t break the bank, and these beautiful speakers will fit snugly into your home.

And the money?
A 10% deposit of  £99.95 followed by 12 monthly payments of £75. Please contact us for more information.

2. Quad 25L Classic – £1749

Quad-25L-Classic-three

Taking things up a level – but still keeping it nice and affordable – we have the delightful Quad 25L Classics, Quad’s flagship dynamic speakers. These traditionally styled speakers come in four striking finishes, all hand laid and polished, and are best suited for a more tradional décor – one of the few on this list that is. Quad know what they’re doing. They have been around for decades and in that time have crafted some of our favourite speakers, including their flagship Quad ESL 2812 and Quad ESL 2912 electrostatic speakers. At this price they’re an alternative to the ProAc 148s they feature woven kevlar drive units. Stong, durable and vastly impressive. And one of the four finishes is bound to win you over.

Why do we like them?
Considering their pedigree, their sound and their looks – these are an absolute steal at under £2000. Very much worth the purchase, especially if your prefer traditional over contemporary.

And the money?
A 10% deposit of £174.90 followed by 12 monthly payments of £131.18. Please contact us for more information.

3. KEF R700 – £1999

KEF-R700

It’s no secret that we love KEF’s speakers. There aren’t many that can produce such a crisp, bright sound. And the R700s are our favourite speakers in the KEF R-series range. These beautiful floorstander specimens deliver a much greater bass response than the KEF R500 speakers but with a much smaller – ergo, more practical – footprint than the KEF R900s. So they’re a lovely R-Series middle ground. As with anything KEF, it’s all about the sound, and as they’re KEF – the sound is stunning. But the R-series range comes in a choice of traditional wood finishes and the more contemporary black/white gloss options. This is a pretty stand out feature as many speakers at this level are available in traditional or contemporary only. They also make cracking front speakers in a KEF R-series 5.1 set-up with KEF R100 on the rears and a KEF R400B subwoofer and a KEF R600C centre speaker, or even as rear speakers if you’re brave enough to have KEF R900s  on the front! Whether it’s music or movies, the R700 make a lasting impression. And yes, we have pretty much every package combination you can think of.

Why do we like them?
They play so well with others, and they’re very versatile. In every way. We recommend having a play around with package options. There’s something for anyone and everything.

And the money?

4. ProAc D20R – £2560

ProAC-D20R

These are – as it stands – our favourite model ProAc’s, (although that may change now the ProAc D48R  has been released, but we’ll wait to hear them before we make any sort of statement. The D20Rs are the same size as the ProAc D18 at £2145, but add the ribbon tweeter featured in Pro-Ac’s higher end speakers. They essentially fill the gap between the ProAc D18 and the ProAc D30R wherein you don’t need a speaker as big as the D30R – so not too bad if space is a bit of an issue. With an open, airy top end and pinpoint imaging, matched to the gusto of the D18, the D20R’s are unbeatable. If you have a budget of around £2500 for floorstanders, you must give these a try. And as a dedicated ProAc dealer, we can demo these against the D18 and the D30R and advise on the most suitable choice for both your room and system. There’s a cup of tea in it for you too.

Why do we like them?
They’re pretty, they sound great and they are still pretty affordable. We love then, and we know that you will love them too.

5. Dali Fazon F5 – £2699

Dali-F5-Fazon

Yes, they’re pretty wacky looking (this is Dali)  and they are one of the wildcards in this line up, so you may be thinking these only get a mention because styling. But  this isn’t the case. Yep – they are highly stylised, and certainly a talking piece.  But the Dali Fazon F5 are also incredibly accomplished performers. Sure, the styling is one of the strongest reasons to buy them, but you won’t regret it when you listen. Indeed, What Hi-Fi? commented ‘the Fazon F5s deliver a hugely entertaining performance that, in some ways, is good enough to leave most traditional rivals struggling’. So, they are more than just impressive to look at – What Hi-Fi? Are hardly easy to impress.

Why do we like them?
They’re wonderfully weird, and carry sound beautifully. Definitely worth a consideration, especially with the finance package we have available.

6. Focal Aria 948 – £2798

Focal Aria 948

If you like your speakers huge – in both size and sound, these Focals are HUGE, not to mention incredible value for money. Our customers often guess these are far more expensive as the scale of the sound rivals of other speakers we’ve dealt at 3 times the cost. Perfect for filling a large space, or simply playing your favourite music loud and proud without any loss of detail or clarity, these speakers deliver everything you could want from a speaker. Arrange a listen to these in our showroom (they’re a definite fixture) and hear the difference between these and smaller footprint speakers – it’s pretty striking.

Why do we like them?
They’re a bloody bargain. And we like our sound loud – you won’t get much louder (and clearer) for under £3000 – we dare you to try and find some.

And the money?
A 10% deposit of £279.80 followed by 24 monthly payments of £104.93. Please contact us for more information.

7. Dali Rubicon 8 – £3999
Dali-Rubicon-8

The newbie on this list is a relative newcomer to the realm of speakers. If you like Dali, but don’t want to spend too much, the Rubicon 8 is a flagship model is an excellent and affordable – and in the case of the 2, the floorstanding – alternative to the Rubicon 2, the Rubicon 5 and the Rubicon 6 all of which we have on demo in our showroom, so a comparison is easy. Imagine everything that is outstanding about the very h-end Dali Epicon range, distilled down into a more affordable speaker. You have the Rubicon range. The only thing that differs is the finish, but we can take a little scrimping on the finish when the sound is of such a high quality.

Why do we like them?
They’re affordable Dali. They look like Dali, they sound like Dali – they are Dali. And they’re every bit as impressive as anything else Dali have produced.

And the money?

9. Focal Electra II 1038 Be – £7599

Focal-Electra-II-1038-Be

A very firm Audio Affair favourite these beauties have been designed to give an even deeper base response than the Focal 1028 Be. We have always ranked Focals have always as among the best speakers we’ve heard and the surprisingly minute footprint of the 1038 means they will fit into reasonably sized living rooms, with the ability to fill much larger rooms with their jaw-dropping, rich, full and detailed sound. They will not dominate even the most normal of spaces, as they are styled to blend in and make the sound the strongest feature. They are so impressive, Focal haven’t felt the need to change them for several years. And they are still as much of a customer favourite, even after all this time.

Why do we like them?
What can we say? They’re not cheap, but they’re worth every penny. Maybe more. A classic design and a classic sound.
