Cost effective amplifiers that are beautifully built and handle the sound well do come along once in a while. And sometimes they have the pedigree of a distinguished hi-fi brand in order to back them up. That’s the case with the amplifier at the centre of this particular piece. It doesn’t cost a fortune, but that’s no reason to overlook it. In its short span on the shelves, it has picked up numerous awards and five star ratings, and is showing no signs of slowing down.

Let’s take a closer look.

That is the Onkyo A-9010 Integrated Stereo Amplifier. It’s harbours a functional design and look that may betray it at first glance. But, beneath its somewhat ordinary yet neat and pleasing facade, there are some interesting technologies in play – where the real design effort went. For instance, the units are all tuned in the UK. That might not sound like a big deal, but it has enabled Onkyo to easily and cheaply incorporate modified circuitrie, alongside four audio-grade capacitors specifically designed to a deliver warm full-bodied sound that isn’t atypical of an integrated amplifier.

Other notable features include a large transformer, high-current low impedance circuitry and an output stage geared for discretion, all enabling minimal distortion and allowing for a precise level of control with the tuners on the interface.

Features-wise, the Onkyo A-9010 Integrated Stereo Amplifier has several line level inputs, an array of tuners a MM phono stage and an individual headphone output, ensuring you have your stereo and headphone needs covered in one fell swoop. and the gold plated speaker terminals are a touch to assist with isolation, which the unit as a whole manages beautifully. Couple this with a “dense extruded aluminium heat sink” to maintain a cool operating temperature, and you have an amplifier capable of holding its own within its price bracket, and beyond.

Five star reviews don’t come out of nowhere, and the A-9010 is no exception to that. It’s robust and well built, with controls that are pleasant to touch and a sound that’s even more pleasant. Surprisingly so. Warm, musical and lively, and far beyond its budget price. It’s been called the best stereo amplifier within its bracket (i.e. under £300) and when you hear it, you get it.

It sounds great after about an hour of play. Tannoy Revolution R1 speakers 17 years old sound sweet as a nut.
