Roy Orbison All Time Greatest Hits are presented here on an audiophile CD from MoFi. After MoFi had much success with the Little Richard hits package, they visited the Sony vaults to identify and audition the original masters of another rock pioneer for this famous Roy Orbison collection. It was originally compiled by Monument Records in 1972 and has stayed in print ever since. Before being wooed away by the old MGM Records label, Orbison experienced an astonishing run for Monument, placing fifteen singles (all included here) in the Top 100 on the pop and country charts. Probably the best sounding versions of these tracks that have ever been available on CD!

Why audiophile mastering on CD?

While the sonic benefits of audiophile LPs obviously include less noise and better dynamics, there are many advantages of audiophile CDs. In similarity to the LPs, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) 'Ultradisc' CD releases are mastered from the original master tapes or the album (hence the 'Original Master Recording' at the top of every sleeve) and pressed on gold CDs. This reduces the problems of many standard CD releases, which are often mastered from fifth or sixth generation copies, which leads to a poorer sounding representation of the original recording. Mastering from the original recording allows every detail and nuance from the original recording to be translated to this release. Furthermore, the sound of CDs is highly influenced by the accuracy and timing of the digital 1s and 0s reflected off the CD surface onto the CD player's laser. The gold surface used on these releases reflects 1s and 0s more accurately than a standard CD surface, which leads to a much smoother sound with better dynamics. Overall, the releases have a much more analog and natural sound without any of the harshness found on many standard CDs.
