In the late 1950s, Gerry Mulligan started recording with fellow saxophonists that included such immortals as Stan Getz, Paul Desmond, Johnny Hodges and Ben Webster. He resumed this in 1986 for this one date on which his baritone is matched with the tenor of Scott Hamilton. The music includes warm ballads and some fairly hot 'romps' (five of the seven tracks are his originals), the album consistently swings and is very enjoyable! This MFSL Hybrid Ultradisc is arguably the best sounding release of this album ever available and a fantastic system test drive disc! 

Why audiophile mastering on CD?

While the sonic benefits of audiophile LPs obviously include less noise and better dynamics, there are many advantages of audiophile CDs. In similarity to the LPs, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) 'Ultradisc' CD releases are mastered from the original master tapes or the album (hence the 'Original Master Recording' at the top of every sleeve) and pressed on gold CDs. This reduces the problems of many standard CD releases, which are often mastered from fifth or sixth generation copies, which leads to a poorer sounding representation of the original recording. Mastering from the original recording allows every detail and nuance from the original recording to be translated to this release. Furthermore, the sound of CDs is highly influenced by the accuracy and timing of the digital 1s and 0s reflected off the CD surface onto the CD player's laser. The gold surface used on these releases reflects 1s and 0s more accurately than a standard CD surface, which leads to a much smoother sound with better dynamics. Overall, the releases have a much more analog and natural sound without any of the harshness found on many standard CDs.
