An electrostatic speaker creates sound from a
force against a membrane within an electrostatic field. In contrast to a cone
driven speaker, the design allows electrostatic speakers to be relatively
thin and light. In contrast to a cone driver, the levels of
sonic distortion are much lower and they can sound
incredibly transparent, owing to the fact the radiating surface is far less able
to hold energy which is then released as sound later on. This can occur more from
cone drivers - only by miliseconds of course, but enough to make
electrostatics sound noticeably more accurate and more impressive at creating a
holographic soundstage.
